The most famous and possibly the most popular of Dickens's novels, A Tale of Two Cities shows a master of dramatic narrative extracting gold from the ore of history. If the bloody tableau of the French Revolution were not in itself sufficient for a dozen novels, Dickens added to it a professional resurrectionist, an authentic ogress, and an antihero as convincingly flawed as any in modern literature.

John Lee is a masterful narrator whose rich British voice is perfect to bring this classic novel to life. It would have been fabulous to have this technology available during my misspent youth. It would have offered a much deeper appreciation for the story and the language . I'm putting many books read by John Lee on my wish list now!

The acclaimed author of The End of Nature takes a three-week walk from his current home in Vermont to his former home in the Adirondacks and reflects on the deep hope he finds in the two landscapes.

I should have listened to the sample first, but because I am a fan of Bill McKibben, I just ordered it. Big mistake. I can't decide whether it was the monotone narrator or the monotone and rambling story that was really disappointing. Maybe this would have been better read by the author or by a narrator with more youth and energy. Perhaps the disappoint is greater because I have heard McKibben speak and he is an engaging speaker with a good voice. I'd pass on this one had I been a more careful consumer. I'll avoid this narrator for sure!

Why we think it’s a great listen: Some books are meant to be read; others are meant to be heard – Water for Elephants falls into the second group, and is one of the best examples we have of how a powerful performance enhances a great story. Nonagenarian Jacob Jankowski reflects back on his wild and wondrous days with a circus. It's the Depression Era and Jacob, finding himself parentless and penniless, joins the Benzini Brothers Most Spectacular Show on Earth.

What a fabulous yarn...pain, pathos and joy. A life told in full color. The readers were wonderfu;l the story is one to remember. I'd love to see the movie treatment. I loved it.

In this breathtaking and beautiful novel, the #1 New York Times best-selling author Anna Quindlen creates an unforgettable portrait of a mother, a father, a family, and the explosive, violent consequences of what seem like inconsequential actions.

The story was riveting and familar turf for all that have experienced the "joy" of adolescence with their own children. While not all the issues are this extreme, there are identifiable threads throughout. And the exploration of personal responsibility, guilt, and forgiveness are very compelling. Great listen.

Why we think it’s a great listen: The most celebrated performance in all of Audible’s history, The Help has nearly 2,000 5-star reviews from your fellow listeners. We hear the print book’s not bad, either. In pitch-perfect voices, Kathryn Stockett creates three extraordinary women whose determination to start a movement of their own forever changes a town, and the way women - mothers, daughters, caregivers, friends - view one another.

I LOVED this story! That alone would have been enough, but it was just beautifully read in the right tone and context. Not much else I can say that expresses the wonderful total experience of this audio version. Go get it!

In 1989 Ken Follett astonished the literary world with The Pillars of the Earth, set in 12th-century England. Readers and listeners ever since have hoped for a sequel. At last, here it is. Although the two novels may be listened to in any order, World Without End also takes place in Kingsbridge, two centuries after the townspeople finished building their exquisite Gothic cathedral. The cathedral is again at the center of a web of love and hate, greed and pride, ambition and revenge.

I finished the book today. It was a great sequel to the wonderful Pillars of the Earth. This will be a hard act for other authors to follow. Both the story and the reader were wonderful! Highly recommend it.

Why we think it’s a great listen: Got 40 hours to kill? You’ll find the time when you start listening to Lee’s take on Follett’s epic – and widely celebrated – novel of 12th-century England. The Pillars of the Earth tells the story of Philip, prior of Kingsbridge, a devout and resourceful monk driven to build the greatest Gothic cathedral the world has known...of Tom, the mason who becomes his architect - a man divided in his soul...and of the beautiful, elusive Lady Aliena, haunted by a secret shame....

This masterful work pulled a fabulous cast of humans into the story of the world's most incredible architecture and its' period history. I listened to the unabridged version. It was well worth hearing all the glorious details and the time just flew. The narration was first rate and at the end, everything stopped until it was finished! I can't wait to get to World Without End next.
