I don't think this book got a fair rating by the last critic. I read it and wanted to listen to it again while at the gym, which I do a lot with books I like. This is not really a hard core horror book. It isn't a sweetie-pie romance either. But at heart it is a romance. It is the painful transformation of an essentially selfish man, who has been changed into a monster by gypsy revenge. Wicklund is not easy on him, which could turn off some readers. In fact, I definitely disliked him at first. The thing is, she manages to hook you into the characters slowly until you know he is either doomed to become the most self-loathing creature who has ever faced immortality or the heroine will in fact save him at the possible expense of her own soul/life. And she makes you care. You will not know until the end. Tragedy or redemption, I can't say or you will all want my throat--me too, I hate spoilers. All I can say is this is a gripping book for anyone who I enjoys a good vampire with their romance.
I have read several of Wicklund's books, and I love her cast of characters, whether major or supporting.
I love the duel scene. She is very descriptive and makes her scenes come to life.
When I am in a rotten mood, I enjoy reading Wicklund's books to pick up my spirits. Now I can listen while doing other chores! Great. Love having her books available in audio.
