It is 1648, a small village in the Alps: In the thick of a blizzard,a town priest discovers he’s been poisoned. As numbness creeps up his body, he summons the last of his strength and scratches a sign in the frost that will lead the town hangman, his daughter, and the town physician in pursuit of a treasure of the Knights Templar. But the priest’s murderer is already on their trail, and he’s not the only one after the legendary fortune: a dark monk is not far behind, and a band of thieves is roving the countryside, attacking solitary travelers and spreading panic.

I was hoping for more history of the 15th century. The dialogue had a very modern tone to it which was offputting. Things (events) just happened and happened and then it ended. It was fairly light hearted and humorous and I was looking for a more serious effort.

When a mysterious client approaches Abby Cooper with a cryptic message about a young mother who has vanished, Abby is more than willing to get involved. After all, it’s the perfect distraction from dealing with the headache of her sister Cat – who has flown into town and turned Abby and Dutch’s impending nuptials into Weddingpalooza.

What would have made Lethal Outlook better?

It was too silly. There was so much trivial fill that I couldn't stay with it. Was it supposed to create suspense? It didn't for me.

Would you ever listen to anything by Victoria Laurie again?

    No

What didn’t you like about Elizabeth Michaels’s performance?

The narration was not so much the problem. She was just acting out a very silly narrative.

KOKO. Only four men knew what it meant. Now they must stop it. They are Vietnam vets — a doctor, a lawyer, a working stiff, and a writer. Very different from each other, they are nonetheless linked by a shared history and a single shattering secret. Now, they have been reunited and are about to embark on a quest that will take them from Washington, D.C., to the graveyards and fleshpots of the Far East to the human jungle of New York.

This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?

Men who like this author's work

What do you think your next listen will be?

    The Trinity Game

Did Patrick Lawlor do a good job differentiating all the characters? How?

That's what did me in. It took me ages to first, get the names straight then, to get the characters straight. Then he kept bringing in new characters.

You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?

    Not for me.

    Any additional comments?

The book felt very crowded and the narration was too fast. That is possibly what his readers like.

  • The Warmth of Other Suns: The Epic Story of America's Great Migration

In this epic, beautifully written masterwork, Pulitzer Prize–winning author Isabel Wilkerson chronicles one of the great untold stories of American history: the decades-long migration of black citizens who fled the South for northern and western cities in search of a better life. From 1915 to 1970, this exodus of almost six million people changed the face of America. Wilkerson interviewed more than a thousand people, and gained access to previously untapped data and official records, to write this definitive and vividly dramatic account of how these American journeys unfolded, altering our cities, our country, and ourselves.

This is one of the best books that I've ever read. The scope of the book covers the 60 years of blacks migrating to the north, east and west. It rarely gets boring. Mostly because Wilkerson follows 3 very different people out of the South. She intersperses the data between the ongoing stories of their lives so well that you forget that it's nonfiction. It's only the second book that has moved me, shocked me and made me cry... the other being The Grapes of Wrath. The Jim Crow brutalities and oppression were horrifying and deserved her detailed descriptions. Robin Miles narration has a great deal to do with the books success. She does a superb job of southern voices both men and women, all of them distinct from each other.
I can't recommend the book highly enough.

Everything starts somewhere. For elite military cop Jack Reacher, that somewhere was Carter Crossing, Mississippi, way back in 1997. A young woman is dead, and solid evidence points to a soldier at a nearby military base. But that soldier has powerful friends in Washington. Reacher is ordered undercover - to find out everything he can, to control the local police, and then to vanish. Reacher is a good soldier. But when he gets to Carter Crossing, he finds layers no one saw coming, and the investigation spins out of control. Local sheriff Elizabeth Deveraux has a thirst for justice - and an appetite for secrets.

    Never Again,

I've read Lee Child before and had enjoyed it but this book, in my humble opinion, was terrible. The narrator was too melodramatic in his story telling. There was way too much macho testosterone, The sex scenes were agonizingly slow and felt gratuitously explicit as well as serving as much of the "fill" that burdened the book. If it hadn't been for all of the above, it was a very interesting story. PJD

The Mote In God's Eye is their acknowledged masterpiece, an epic novel of mankind's first encounter with alien life that transcends the genre. No lesser an authority than Robert A. Heinlein called it "possibly the finest science fiction novel I have ever read".

    J. Rhoderick says: "A great read!"
"Maybe there was Mote in my eye."
    Overall

I read this book based entirely on Heinline's recommendation. I found it to be one cut above a comic book. The characters were stereotypical as in Dr. Horvath and cardboard thin. The book could have been at least a third shorter. The pacing seemed very uneven. The narrator made almost everyone speak in the same halted and stiff speech. I didn't want to finish it but I had to find out what happened even though the solution of the blockade seemed unimaginable and anticlimactic. AND it took way to long to get to. Comic books move right along.

Enter the world of the rich charismatic Lytton family and their powerful publishing empire in this passionate family saga, spanning the Edwardian era to World War I and the excesses of the glamorous 20s. Enter the world of Celia LyttonÑa woman who is used to getting her way. She moves through life making difficult and often dangerous decisions that affect herself and others.

I'm not above a good soap opera...Trollope, Dickens, etc., but this one was so bad that I must warn people about it. It's written in the Romance fiction genre as in Barbara Cartlen, etc. The love scenes are ridiculous. There is so much "fill" that one sits and waits for the plot to move on. The narrator does and okay job with the British accents except for the lower classes which cause one to wince every time she does one. Stereotypical cardboard characterizations throughout.
    A big disappointment.
