Torn between the stirring example of his mother and the lurid romance of the bar, J.R. tried to forge a self somewhere in the center. But when it was time for J.R. to leave home, the bar became an increasingly seductive sanctuary, a place to return and regroup during his picaresque journeys. Time and again, the bar offered shelter from failure, rejection, heartbreak, and eventually from reality.

A wonderfully insightful book about one boy's navigation towards adulthood! Listened while driving and the normally exhausting 6 hours passed very pleasantly!

Alexandra Fuller won worldwide attention, popular acclaim, and critical accolades for her memoir of her childhood in Africa, Don’t Let’s Go to the Dogs Tonight. This engaging follow-up explores Fuller’s parents’ childhoods and charts the trajectories of their lives through all the British couple’s experiences in war-torn Africa. With the same sharply etched narrative that has earned the author such immense praise, Fuller expands on and offers new insights into her family’s remarkable trials and successes.

The story begins in 1962. On a rocky patch of the sun-drenched Italian coastline, a young innkeeper, chest-deep in daydreams, looks out over the incandescent waters of the Ligurian Sea and spies an apparition: a tall, thin woman, a vision in white, approaching him on a boat. She is an actress, he soon learns, an American starlet, and she is dying. And the story begins again today, half a world away, when an elderly Italian man shows up on a movie studio's back lot - searching for the mysterious woman he last saw at his hotel decades earlier.

I found that the parts of the story that take place in Italy are very interesting, and these are the parts where the narrator EXCELS. However, all of the rest of the multiple directions the story takes are barely tolerable, and then after all of that, the ending is not very satisfying. Guess I had my hopes up too high from all of the GREAT reviews I read.

Greece in the age of heroes. Patroclus, an awkward young prince, has been exiled to the kingdom of Phthia to be raised in the shadow of King Peleus and his golden son, Achilles. “The best of all the Greeks”—strong, beautiful, and the child of a goddess—Achilles is everything the shamed Patroclus is not. Yet despite their differences, the boys become steadfast companions. Their bond deepens as they grow into young men and become skilled in the arts of war and medicine—much to the displeasure and the fury of Achilles’ mother, Thetis, a cruel sea goddess with a hatred of mortals.

I loved the whole package here!
The magnetic voice and performance drew me in; and the story, even though I remember bits from school years ago, is written so interestingly that I am compelled to keep listening & listening!
This is another of those rare audio books that I couldn't wait to listen to every day & was actually a little sad when I reached the end.

At once naturalistic epic, captivity narrative, road novel, and transcendental gospel, Steinbeck’s, The Grapes of Wrath is perhaps the most American of American classics. Although it follows the movement of thousands of men and women and the transformation of an entire nation during the Dust Bowl migration of the 1930s, The Grapes of Wrath is also the story of one Oklahoma farm family, the Joads, who are forced to travel west to the promised land of California.

Dan Harlow says: "Almost more relevant now than when it was written"

Would you listen to The Grapes of Wrath again? Why?

No, as much as I loved it, I think reading a book twice is enough for me.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

    It made me cry.

    Any additional comments?

Can't remember liking the book this much when I read it first in high school! Loved Dylan Baker's performance!

    Overall

The material this program teaches, is in a easy to learn, effective format. However the phrases being taught are phrases I rarely (if ever) use in English & doubt that I will EVER use in Spanish. (Do you brush your teeth after or before you comb your hair every morning?)I don't remember ANY NORMAL conversations in the whole book! But I DO know how to say "He takes off all his clothes every night at 11:00." That should come in real handy in a restaurant! Why can't they teach the same techniques using conversations that are actually useful?
