This book had promise, but in all the story lines fizzled out. I could imagine a different author taking the outline and really adding the impact it lacked. The narrator was very talented with multiple voices.
If you want to know some of the unique nuances of Southern Culture, you can trust Lee Smith to deliver. So many details are captured and woven perfectly into a truly beliveable story. Mollys ability to survive and perservere makes me more appreciative of my own life. I love reading a good southern novel that can take me back to the South I know. The soft musical ending helps to ease you out of that time and back into the present. I would love to meet Lee Smith and spend an afternoon on the porch with a pitcher of "Sweet Tea" and sharing stories.
It was easy to get lost in this story. So well done by Mr. Doig. As a native Idahoan, my knowledge of Montana, Idaho and Washington, gave me even more of an experience of going home. Listen carefully and you will experience it as it is, for yourself.
A very talented author who captures the simplicity of the time, and intricacy of the characters.
One of the few Authors I would love to meet.
Ivan Doig captures the essence of rural life when things were less complicated. I so enjoyed the development of each of the characters. By the end of the book, I could have drawn the school house and could have recognized each person had I met them on the street.
This is my third Ivan Doig title, and I enjoy falling into another time with each new story. A more grownup version of Little House on the Prairie with more complex storylines. I can't wait to start my next Ivan Doig Novel.
The description of the book was the best thing about a story that had great potential. Weak characters, with a predictable plot line, like the previous reviewer, this story is aimed more to the beginning Harlequin reader. The narrator provided a excellent interpetation of the elegance of English with a beautiful British Accent. I finished this because I feel every book I purchase deserves to be read, but it was a struggle to finish.
