Khaled Hosseini, the number-one New York Times best-selling author of The Kite Runner and A Thousand Splendid Suns, has written a new novel about how we love, how we take care of one another, and how the choices we make resonate through generations.

I could hardly contain myself I was so excited for this book to come out...but in the end, I just didn't get it.

I was hooked at the start but something happened--all the stories stalled and never went anywhere. It's not just that there were a lot of characters and that the plot is all back story--it's that so much was so irrelevant to the main characters. It's almost as if the author gathered several short stories together and fabricated a way to combine them into a novel.

    It didn't work for me.

Why we think it’s a great listen: An all-time Audible favorite that mixes historic fiction, adventure, and romance with one of the most fascinating literary devices: time travel. Outlander introduces an exhilarating world of heroism and breathtaking thrills as one woman is torn between past and present, passion and love. In 1945, former combat nurse Claire Randall returns from World War II and joins her husband for a second honeymoon. But their blissful reunion is shattered....

I do not understand the rave reviews. I stayed with Outlander until the end--as I have experienced many books whose endings have redeemed my otherwise disappointed investment. But, Outlander never delivered. Outlander is nothing more than setup. There is no plot beyond a series of close calls and narrow escapes with sex scenes between.

I know it's a series and that's the problem with series--authors often don't feel like they owe their readers a good story within the covers of the page they are currently holding. I am unwilling to trust the author with another 38 hours for the Book2. Each book in the series gets increasingly longer-- 26, 38, 43, 44, 55 and 57. Maybe the other books are better, but I certainly cannot trust the reviews I've read, so I'm out after one.

Would you try another book from Kate Morton and/or Caroline Lee?

I love both Kate Morton and Caroline Lee, but this book has a lot of holes.

Would you ever listen to anything by Kate Morton again?

    Of course.

What does Caroline Lee bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

    Caroline Lee is amazing!

If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from The Forgotten Garden?

The Epilogue is ridiculous. It looks as if the book was edited in the wrong places. These elements of the story were not satisfactorily resolved: the brooch, the maze, the brother's obsession and "the bad man." If I was the editor, all of these would have to be changed or eliminated.

Michelle Maxwell has just blown her future with the Secret Service. Against her instincts, she let a presidential candidate out of her sight to comfort a grieving widow. Then, behind closed doors, the politician whose safety was her responsibility vanished into thin air.

What would have made Split Second better?

All the main characters had the same personality--arrogant and sarcastic with something to prove.

What was most disappointing about David Baldacci’s story?

The plot was implausible and ridiculous--which means the ending was unsatisfying.

How did the narrator detract from the book?

I will avoid all Scott Brick books. He amplified the sarcasm, perhaps adding some where it was not intended. His cadence dripped with disdain.

You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?

    Nope.

    Well...it finally ended.

    Any additional comments?

The audible version was poorly produced. The scene often shifted without the narrator taking a breath. If I lost focus for a split second (pun intended), I had to shake my head and scramble for the rewind button. Very annoying.

It is Nick and Amy Dunne's fifth wedding anniversary. Presents are being wrapped and reservations are being made when Nick's clever and beautiful wife disappears from their rented McMansion on the Mississippi River. Husband-of-the-Year Nick isn't doing himself any favors with cringe-worthy daydreams. Under mounting pressure from the police and the media - as well as Amy's fiercely doting parents - the town golden boy parades an endless series of lies, deceits, and inappropriate behavior. Nick is oddly evasive, and he's definitely bitter - but is he really a killer?

Would you try another book from Gillian Flynn and/or Julia Whelan and Kirby Heyborne ?

    Not unless I get desperate.

How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?

Give us at least one likeable character and an ending. Please.

What three words best describe Julia Whelan and Kirby Heyborne ’s voice?

Julia doing male voices was really annoying. Kirby was okay.

    Any additional comments?

The twists and turns are overrated. There's one good twist and a bunch of droning posturing.

The circus arrives without warning. No announcements precede it. It is simply there, when yesterday it was not. Within the black-and-white striped canvas tents is an utterly unique experience full of breathtaking amazements. It is called Le Cirque des Rêves, and it is only open at night.

Jim Dale is incredible...as always! Nothing to complain about regarding the narration. It was spot on!

The story, however, got bogged down in nothingness. I got so bored toward the end I didn't care how it ended. The premise dazzles but fades in the execution. The purpose and conclusion of the "competition" did not satisfy--and that one little fact sullied the whole endeavor.
