Very enjoyable period mystery. Highly recommended if you enjoy the genre. Not as good as some claim it to be, Caleb Carr I believe is great, this is good but not of the same caliber as the Alienist... Do read it, enjoy it, and if you have not read the Alienist put it on your list....
Great story.... Great characters... Twists that surprise.... Highly recommended!!!!
If you are fan of mystery and police procedural, don't miss this one!!!
Another great story by the naster... Characters are so easy to relate to and empathize with....
Harry Bosch just keeps getting better... Narration is great, story is great, twists are surprising. Highly recommended!!!
This is a great police procedural. A great mystery solved and an intimate look inside Harry Bosch. All the accolades you read are true, this is a great series and I HIGHLY recommend it if you are into the genre. You will find no better!!!!
As I reread this series I am simply amazed at how great they are!!! Harry Bosch and Dick Hill make this one of the best series on the market... IMHO you can't be a fan of this genre and not enjoy this series... Narration is the best!
I read the first 6 novels of this series back in the 90s. Why I stopped, don't know, but a recent reviewer I follow had a similar story and he started to reread the series and had nothing but the best to say about the author and the series. So as I looked back I could only remember the story line of "Black Echo" nothing else. I then started with the 2nd novel "Black Ice" and was blown away by the quality of this police procedural! The characters, the location, the mystery, all combine to create a story that never allowed me to lose interest. I could not wait to get back and read more. The personalities, the human frailty, characters that are real; no super human powers here... Dick hill is beyond excellent, he brings Harry Bosch alive! I have purchased the next novel in the series and can't wait to get started!
FIVE STARS!!!!! I don't give a 5 star rating easily but this novel is a gem that I enjoyed, marveled over, took pearls of wisdom about life from, and was sad to see it end. I can tell you without ant hesitation that this is one of the best books I have listed to and read!!!~ (immersion reading) Characters, plot, location, you name it and it was all there. I am not going to go into detail about the specifics, but to say read all the positive reviews and believe what they say. I was sad to see this book end, but the characters and events will stay with me. To me that is the sign of a meaningful novel that is well told. Narration is excellent after I had it play a 1.5 time. The original speed was a little too slow for me. Other than that read it!!!!
Life in the USSR under Stalin is the backdrop for this mystery. I really enjoyed the history lesson, story, characters, and narrator. I highly recommend this book and will leave all the accolades to the literary critics. All the positives are right on!!!
Too much philosophy not enough action... The story drags on and the constant philosophy lessons take away from the main storyline. Boring, drawn out, just a 500 plus page book that should have been 300 pages!
I tried to finish this book but could not get into the characters. I could not relate, empathize, or feel their pain. The characters had no soul, no human quality, they were plastic, superficial... The movie was better!!! do not recommend.
