An excellent book. Well-read. Well written. Kept me involved from the first to last page.
There is no way in an audible format you can listen and retain all the names, places, dates, etc. But you can listen and retain most of it in a more general way. This is an EXCELLENT history and Shirer did a great job in compiling facts. Performance, overall, story--extremely well done.
This book had so many details and facts and names, that is wasn't suitable for an audible listen. Much better hard copy which you could read and then go back to check on what you read earlier.
My husband and I decided to listen to the Longmire series together. We like all the books, the performer and stories. Nice break from more intense mystery/suspense novels.
Well-written and for fans of LeCarre, this will be a good book. There is lots of discussion and little action. Unfortunately, I am a fan of books full of suspense and the tension that comes with it. So this book was not for me.
Overall the book was good. Good is the best I can rate it as it was not really memorable nor gripping. And isn't that what suspense/thriller is all about???
I had to check several times to make sure this was a Ken Follett book. It is the first I have ever thought of putting down and not picking back up. I think a great deal was the flat tone of the narrator. Hard to stay awake when the voice doesn't modulate much at all. Story was okay. For Follett this is a real downfall in my ratings. It is a book I could have skipped and been very happy for doing so.
I know the description said 'ghosts'....but I didn't expect spirits and magic etc to take over the book. I was so enthralled by the author's use of words and the reader's enthusiasm in reading the book--I thought I could make it through to the end--but not so. Plot was not for me....Oh so sorry--but would love it if this author actually wrote a more realistic book.
The story is told by an usual character....in a fairly believable way. This adds to the book's dimensions. Story is excellent. Very nicely done book and narration.
Interesting in that it makes the reader question what is and isn't real in an unusual way. The use of true historical characters keeps it a little more plausible and readable. I am afraid I am not a huge fan... usually not a sci-fi/supernatural book reader....
For such a long book--it did keep my interest. I often wondered why it could not have been edited better....to a shorter, quicker moving story. Interesting...and worth the read--but not my favorite.
