Interesting story of pioneer New Zealand. However as a genuine "Kiwi" pakeha, I found the narration rather bland and her poor pronunciation of Maori words and place names grated - sometimes they were unrecognisable. The "Maori accent" of the Maori workers speaking English was also poorly portrayed.
Story has a lot of potential but the Narrator has destroyed my enjoyment of the book. The over-exaggerated dramatic portrayal of the characters leaves me disliking every character!
Disappointed. Would like to try another book by this author but would NOT listen to another book with this Narrator.
What an interesting book. The narration was superb and made the characters come alive. Amazing insights of one man's journey through profound love, developing faith as he handles his beloved wife's illness and subsequent death.
I'm afraid I never got past the first 3 chapters of this book. The story and narrator combined to leave an impression of unrelenting gloom. I failed to get drawn to any of the characters. Nothing made me want to make the effort of listening any further. I am returning this to find something I enjoy listening to!
I found myelf drawn into this story from the start with my interest held right down to the end of the epilogue. Mary Ingles was an amazing woman. Her courage and determination despite the formidable challenges were a constant inspiration. Fascinating insights into the history of USA early pioneers especially in relation to American Indian population.
Quality narration. well written. Well worth the credit :)
I bought this because of reviews recommending and wasn't disappointed. The characters are well developed and believable, enhanced by wonderful expression by narrators. The book sensitively explores themes around grief and the search for love, value and belonging in a contemporary setting.
Held my attention to the last word. Left me enriched.
I was held involved throughout by this inspiring true story of a courageous family group coping with amazing fortitude throughout the long years of the war. Well written and very well performed. Excellent value for money. Highly recommended.
I almost gave up because the story seemed quite slow moving and ponderous for the first half. However the characters grew on me and the second half proved quite fascinating both with insight into the period and some clever turns in the plot.
The narration was excellent which also helped me persevere through the early chapters.
I am pleased I persevered :)
Was looking forward to this book - a music therapist working with children becoming involved in solving a crime. I was so disappointed. The main character was poorly developed and totally unlikeable. In fact all the characters seemed poorly developed and lacking depth. There seemed no reason for their extreme reactions in most situations. I became so frustrated I stopped reading it before the end. I would not bother with another book from this author especially if it had the same main character. I should have taken note of the comments by others who obviously experienced the same disappointment as me.
The story gripped me from the start and held me till the end. Certainly did not expect the ending. Looking forward to another story featuring this detective.
