  • The Day of Battle: The War in Sicily and Italy, 1943-1944

In An Army at Dawn - winner of the Pulitzer Prize - Rick Atkinson provided a dramatic and authoritative history of the Allied triumph in North Africa. Now, in The Day of Battle, he follows the American and British armies as they invade Sicily in July 1943, attack Italy two months later, and then fight their way, mile by bloody mile, north toward Rome. The Italian campaign's outcome was never certain; in fact, President Roosevelt, Prime Minister Churchill, and their military advisors bitterly debated whether an invasion of the so-called soft underbelly of Europe was even wise.

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

This is a really long book that didn't really tell me anything not already known. After 2 days of listening I wanted to scream. But never willing to quit... I plowed through. Unless you want to constantly hear egotistical writings from generals, then skip this book.

    Any additional comments?

After this experience, I will not purchase the final in the series. Quite a disappointment from the first in the series.

Dev Cameron joined the military to fly a starship but is rated unsuitable and grudgingly accepts an assignment with the ground forces, piloting a massive walking tank (a warstrider). But Cameron may yet get a chance at glory when he makes a discovery about the alien foes that could change the course of the war.

Would you try another book from Ian Douglas and/or David Drummond?

I've enjoyed Ian Douglas' work in the past and that's why I tried this one in spite of poor reviews. While I might try another book by Ian, I won't try any more from this series. As far as David Drummond's narration, it was horrible for this book. While Ian created a world that is greatly influenced by Japan, the narration was done with what sounded like a Scottish Pirate.

Would you be willing to try another book from Ian Douglas? Why or why not?

    yes

How did the narrator detract from the book?

Bad accents and intonation made everyone sound scared and panicked

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

Disappointment. I listened to all but the last hour or so and just couldn't stand it anymore.
