  • Plum Island

    • UNABRIDGED (19 hrs and 42 mins)
    • By Nelson DeMille
    • Narrated By Scott Brick
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

Wounded in the line of duty, NYPD homicide cop John Corey is convalescing in rural eastern Long Island when an attractive young couple he knows is found shot to death on the family patio. The victims were biologists at Plum Island, a research site rumored to be an incubator for germ warfare. Suddenly, a local double murder takes on shattering global implications - and thrusts Corey and two extraordinary women into a dangerous search for the secret of Plum Island....

DERALD says: "Great on par with" LION'S GAME""
    "Should be an enjoyable series"
What made the experience of listening to Plum Island the most enjoyable?

The characters and the humor of the main character. Looking forward to the series.

Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

For the most part. I had a hard time visualizing some of the action in a few places but other than that, it was a page turner.

What about Scott Brick’s performance did you like?

He was great with the main character and didn't make the women sound like breathy little old ladies as some narrators do.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

I did have a hard time shutting it off at times.

  • Path of the Assassin: A Thriller

    • UNABRIDGED (13 hrs and 1 min)
    • By Brad Thor
    • Narrated By Armand Schultz
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

After rescuing the President from kidnappers, Navy SEAL turned Secret Service agent Scot Harvath shifts his attentions to rooting out, capturing or killing all those responsible for the plot. As he prepares to close out his list, a bloody and twisted trail of clues points towards one man - the world's most feared, most ruthless terrorist, Hashim Nidal. Nidal has assembled an international league of Islamic terrorist networks in an ingenious plot to topple both Israel and America.

Scott says: "Does not measure up"
What disappointed you about Path of the Assassin?

Thor is sadly no Vince Flynn. It may be that the author took a while to develop his craft but having purchased his first two, I am not keen to listen to any more.(I gave the benefit of the doubt and purchased this one after listening to his first in the series.) I did not finish this book. The corny dialogue and far-fetched story were just too much -- criticism others have voiced and I should have listened too. I wondered if the narrator was to blame for some of it as well as the story's inability to hold my interest, but concluded it was primarily the writing. It seemed amateurish to me, and I am no literary maven. Details seemed thrown in just to impress, the story was unrealistic, dialogue predictable and I didn't find myself caring one iota about any character. Perhaps I am just too spoiled by the Mitch Rapp series written the talented, late Vince Flynn.

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

    Buyer's remorse

  • The Strategist: Be the Leader Your Business Needs

    • UNABRIDGED (6 hrs and 29 mins)
    • By Cynthia Montgomery
    • Narrated By Karen White

Based on an acclaimed professor's legendary strategy course at Harvard Business School, The Strategist offers a radically new perspective on a leader's most vital role. "Are you a strategist?" That's the first question Cynthia Montgomery asks the business owners and senior executives from all over the world who participate in her highly regarded executive education course. It's not a question they anticipate, but by the time the program ends, they cannot imagine leading their companies to success without being - and living the role of - a strategist.

    N. Frota says: "It's Ok, there R better books on Business Strategy"
"Slow going with an odd narrative tone"
Would you try another book from Cynthia Montgomery and/or Karen White?

I found the book very slow without enough meaty content. There were some good points but they were too few and the examples were terribly drawn out. The content seemed repetitive and the history of Apple computer seemed like yet another review with little additional insight and frankly seemed like filler material. For me, the dramatic, soft tone of the narration didn't fit with the content (and it is not because she is female). It lacked a certain business energy that may have made the drawn out book seem even slower. Made me wish I was reading it. I was looking for an insightful, educational book on strategy. This wasn't it.

Has The Strategist turned you off from other books in this genre?

Would you be willing to try another one of Karen White’s performances?

Not if it is a business book. She is probably great with fiction.

You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?

There were some good points that made me think but they were too few and far between.
