I loved this book. I starts out sad, but it develops into an amazingly unique love story. It's funny, lol funny, insightful, and a sheer pleasure to read. Don't miss this one.
I couldn't even get through this book. it was so boring!
I liked the narrator
The honesty really hit home for me. The humor was literally perfect. I got it. This book pulled me in in a rare way. I felt Jeanne's disappointments, her pain, her breakthroughs. Some of her decisions actually made my stomach hurt and I wanted to scream "NO!!!" Then I learned the most important lesson....we can't decide for others. We have to respect their choices and remain faithful.
I would be this author's friend in a New York Minute!
Obviously only SHE could imitate herself and her family members with the nuance and quirkiness that existed as she grew into a woman. I don't think her honesty would have reached me as well on the written page.
The narrator is a master storyteller, capturing the nuance of each character, each turn in the plot.
The moment when I came to know the true relationship of the Golem and the Jinni.
It truly was a toss-up between the Golem and the Jinni! As the story switched between these two amazing characters, each with their own strengths and flaws, I was comfortable moving with them.
No. It's a book to be read slowly, I believe, because there is so much to think about and process when you relate the story to true life.
You will not regret taking the time to read this fantastically written story!!!
Cat and Mouse
personality, a true sense of the characters...amazing!
This is a great book! Just when you think you have the hang of it, it turns the corner and goes in a different, shockingly different, direction. I really had fun reading this one and I highly recommend it
I would recommend this book to a patient person. The twists and turns are definitely worth waiting for and ultimately, the story is very satisfying. As you can tell, I'm leading up to my only criticism....it takes longer than necessary, in my humble opinion, for Grishom to get where he's going. All of the detail provided at the beginning is a bit condescending, but when it picks up speed, it flies!happy reading
The ah-ha moment is very satisfying. I wouldn't dream of giving it away, though
Jackson breaths the story into life. You like him. You want him to win. He gives nothing away while his soothing voice beckons you to read on.
Yes, I would recommend it! Admittedly, the story starts out slow, but given a chance, this is truly a romantic story with a soul. Also, the history of our nation at the period of Worl War II is always so interesting, but this is my first experience reading about it from the standpoint of the Chinese and the Japanese.
Kayko and Henry were my top favorites, of course, but the intensity of the relationship between Henry and his parents (and then Henry with his own son) was riveting. Henry's friend is my hero in the story; so strong, yet so quiet, he is the quintesential friend.
No, but I will!
See above note!
loved it, loved it, loved it! This book has it all, from the multidimensional characters to the incredible landscapes, through a horrific war and a suprising love affair.....you will never be bored.
In addition, the narrator is superb!
This book twists and turns and takes you on a wonderful ride! The characters become like a part of your family...you care for them and about them. You ache with them, then laugh with them. Although it is a serious story with a strong message, it is not too heavy. I was captivated.
It is difficult to write a review about this book as I am conflicted about whether to recommend it for other readers or not. While the characters are extremely well-developed, they're dead before you know it! The historical importance of the plight of slaves in the late 1700's to early 1800's is extremely relevant to the reader, but the sadness and hoplessness in this book was overwhelming for me.
Loved it! The story captures you immediately and carries you through to the end. The characters are as vivid as the story. You'll fly through this one as it is an easy read and you won't regret that you picked it up!
