With more than 30 million copies of his works published, in 37 languages, award-winning author Henning Mankell may be Sweden's most accomplished novelist. Here he crafts the icy, atmospheric tale of Fredrik Welin, a disgraced surgeon living in exile on a small island. When Fredrik receives a surprise visit from a lover he abandoned decades earlier, he begins the difficult road to redemption.

    "A dreary and loathsome hero"

I really enjoyed Man from Beijing but this book was another story...after listening for several hours I found nothing likeable about the self-centered and reprehensible main character.

It is Nick and Amy Dunne's fifth wedding anniversary. Presents are being wrapped and reservations are being made when Nick's clever and beautiful wife disappears from their rented McMansion on the Mississippi River. Husband-of-the-Year Nick isn't doing himself any favors with cringe-worthy daydreams. Under mounting pressure from the police and the media - as well as Amy's fiercely doting parents - the town golden boy parades an endless series of lies, deceits, and inappropriate behavior. Nick is oddly evasive, and he's definitely bitter - but is he really a killer?

Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

    No

Would you recommend Gone Girl to your friends? Why or why not?

If I wouldn't recommend this to one friend, I wouldn't to several friends

What about Julia Whelan and Kirby Heyborne ’s performance did you like?

The performance was fine, the material not so fine

Could you see Gone Girl being made into a movie or a TV series? Who should the stars be?

It has already been signed for movie, I think a TV miniseries would be more appropriate.

    Any additional comments?

In the end, you can't stand any of the characters.

Born a generation apart and with very different ideas about love and family, Mariam and Laila are two women brought jarringly together by war, by loss, and by fate. As they endure the ever escalating dangers around them, in their home as well as in the streets of Kabul, they come to form a bond that makes them both sisters and mother-daughter to each other, and that will ultimately alter the course not just of their own lives but of the next generation.

    David says: "Somber but gripping"
    "Triumphant"
    Overall

I can't seem to put this book down. I finished it several days ago and I still keep thinking about it. I cried for their sarrow and for their joy. I sat in my drive and sobbed. These two women triumphed over their oppressors-fathers and husbands. What a life, what a country and what a religion!
