In the summer of 1916, Dorothy Woodruff and Rosamond Underwood, close friends from childhood and graduates of Smith College, left home in Auburn, New York, for the wilds of northwestern Colorado. Bored by their soci-ety luncheons, charity work, and the effete young men who courted them, they learned that two teach-ing jobs were available in a remote mountaintop schoolhouse and applied—shocking their families and friends.

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

This book would be a better read than it is a listen, especially with this poor narrator who sounds more like a computer than a person.

How could the performance have been better?

The narrator seems to pause at the end of every line as she reads and has little inflection

    Any additional comments?

The story is a good one, although it jumps from place to place in the initial chapters before the young women eventually find themselves in Colorado. What is unexpected is the detailed descriptions of historical events during the period which give the story a depth that most such stories lack.

  • My Ántonia

My Ántonia chronicles the life of Ántonia, a Bohemian immigrant woman, as seen through the eyes of Jim, the man unable to forget her. Jim, now a successful New York lawyer, recollects his upbringing on a Nebraska farm. Even after 20 years, Ántonia continues to live a romantic life in his imagination. When he returns to Nebraska, he finds Ántonia has lived a battered life. Although the man to whom she dedicated her life abandons her, she remains strong and full of courage.

Would you listen to My Ántonia again? Why?

    Yes. I loved the story

What other book might you compare My Ántonia to and why?

Depicts the life of a boy raised in Nebraska, as was Willa Cather, and so it is slightly autobiographical, but it lets the reader know about the early days of the Midwest and how life was there for immigrant families

Have you listened to any of David Colacci’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

No, but this was very well read.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

No, its too long for one sitting, great for a long car trip.

    Any additional comments?

I would recommend all of Cather's books. They are great to listen to because the stories are so well told.
