Amateur sleuth Agatha Raisin is going through a man-hating phase and is unmoved by news of a captivating new curate. But when she meets the golden-haired, blue-eyed Tristan Delon, she is swept off her feet...along with every other female in the village. She is positively ecstatic when he invites her to dine with him, but the next day Agatha is left with a hangover from hell and Tristan is worse off: he's dead.

Would you listen to Agatha Raisin and the Case of the Curious Curate again? Why?

Mysteries are difficult to listen to again as you already know the outcome, but I would recommend this book if you want something "light" to listen to that can make your problems seem less important than Agatha's.

Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

This isn't the kind of book to keep you on the edge of your seat, but the plot is interesting and engaging and the ending will surprise you.

What does Penelope Keith bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

She brings the character of Agatha Raisin to life. Agatha is like someone you know that you can't really call a friend but you like her anyway. I would compare her a lot to the Hyacinth in Keeping Up Appearances".

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

No. This is a book that is easy to listen to as you have time... commuting, in a waiting room, when you have time on your hands.

    Any additional comments?

I like this series because it provides relief from some of the heavier thrillers and action series that I read/ listen to.

  • The Mangle Street Murders: The Gower Street Detectives, Book 1

After her father dies, March Middleton has to move to London to live with her guardian, Sidney Grice, the country's most famous private detective. It is 1882, and London is at its murkiest yet most vibrant, wealthiest yet most poverty-stricken. No sooner does March arrive than a case presents itself: A young woman has been brutally murdered, and her husband is the only suspect.

Where does The Mangle Street Murders rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

March Middleton makes this book. She is intelligent and naive at the same time. The relationship with her guardian makes this a duo you want to hear more from.

What did you like best about this story?

That even the best intentions are not a substitute for experience or a cunning understanding of character of 19th century Londoners.

Have you listened to any of Lindy Nettleton’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

This is my first time listening to Lindy Nettleton. Now, I will make it a point to look for more books narrated by Lindy.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

There are moments when you find you are smiling to yourself because you can relate to the situation or the emotion March is experiencing.

  • The Egyptian: Volume 1

The world of ancient Egypt springs magnificently to life in this astonishing historical novel of love, war, political intrigue, and religious revolution. Told from the first person point of view, it is the story of Sinuhe, physician to the royal court of Pharaoh Amenhotep III and his successors in the middle of the tumultuous 14th century B.C.

Would you try another book from Mika Waltari and/or Charlton Griffin?

I have tried downloading this book several times from my library thinking the download must have been interrupted in the process but no, the book simply stops. No conclusion, no final chapter, no pulling the whole story together. Very disappointing and I find out now it has been discontinued!

Would you be willing to try another book from Mika Waltari? Why or why not?

Can't answer that until I am able to hear the end of this one.

What three words best describe Charlton Griffin’s performance?

The performance ebbs and flows... at one time holding your attention and then becoming so mundane your mind drifts off to contemplate other thoughts entirely.

Could you see The Egyptian being made into a movie or a TV series? Who should the stars be?

    No.

The polluted waters of the canals in Venice are an ever-present issue; but environmental concerns become significant in Commissario Guido Brunetti's work when an investigator from the Carabiniere - looking into the illegal hauling of garbage - asks for a favor. But the investigator is not the only one with a special request.

What made the experience of listening to About Face the most enjoyable?

Listening to Donna Leon's books transports me from midwest Kansas to the Italy I have visited and vacationed in. The narration and narrative are both excellent. This is the fifth book I have listened to that David Colacci has read. I think he is a perfect match for the text.
