  • The Last Precinct

    • UNABRIDGED (17 hrs and 8 mins)
    • By Patricia Cornwell
    • Narrated By Kate Reading
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

We enter The Last Precinct through the reverberating aftershocks of Black Notice, inconceivably finding Virginia's Chief Medical Examiner, Kay Scarpetta, an object of suspicion and criminal investigation. The nightmare on Scarpetta's doorstep continues as she discovers that the so-called Werewolf murders may have extended to New York City and into the darkest corners of her past.

Kathleen says: "Another great Scarpetta novel"
"Epic finish to the first saga!"
Where does The Last Precinct rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

Overall this was probably the best book in the series so far, if not just as good as "Point of Origin". *Spoiler*Really my only complaint is that they didn't really explain why "Jay" didn't kill her, other than the fact that Lucy escaped with the shotgun in hand and was looking for Kay. But he could've killed Kay and looked for Lucy or fled. Other than that, it was fantastic! Cornwell really shined in this one, her narrative is getting better with every book. And really diving into Kay's psyche during the sessions with Anna and the suffocating cloud of existence she was in after that, took her character to a whole other level. Cornwell tied everything up perfectly, all of the unanswered questions from this whole saga. Except, of course, "Jay" and Kiffen's whereabouts, and what happened to "John the Baptist". But it's pretty obvious he's going to prison or will possibly get the death penalty.

What was one of the most memorable moments of The Last Precinct?

The most memorable moment was definitely the Grand Jury hearing. Jaime Berger was fantastic, and Kay and her were perfect. I knew Berger would use her position against Ryder, and it was great that he had to sit there and squirm the whole time! Cornwell should start a series starring Jaime Berger, I would definitely read it. It would be amazing to have these same kind of stories, but from the perspective of an investigative, District's Attorney.

What does Kate Reading bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Kate Reading is Kay Scarpetta! She is buy far my favorite reader, and portrays Scarpetta amazingly. My first Scarpetta book was the audio version of Black Notice, read by Kate Reading. I have since went back and listened to all of the books from the beginning. I listened to all of the ones read by CJ Critt. She was very good as well, but still never compared to Kate Reading. And Reading's side characters are fantastic and mostly better than Critt's. I will say, I preferred Critt's Lucy and Benton, but Reading's Marino is the best!

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

There were so many moving moments in this one it's hard to pick one. Marino's breakdown, then fall to a borderline alcoholic was very moving. Anna's letter was crazy. And the hearing was intense.

    Any additional comments?

I like that she ended this part of Kay's life, she needs a new start. I'm excited to see where she takes her next, and what new characters she introduces. And I hope she finds a way to keep Marino in the mix!
