Mags returns to the Collegium, but there are mixed feelings--his included--about him actually remaining there. No one doubts that he is and should be a Herald, but he is afraid that his mere presence is going to incite more danger right in the heart of Valdemar. The heads of the Collegia are afraid that coming back to his known haunt is going to give him less protection than if he went into hiding. Everyone decides that going elsewhere is the solution for now.

Would you try another book from Mercedes Lackey and/or Nick Podehl?

I might think about another book from this duo. Her first 3 books of the series were enjoyable! Nick did a great job bringing the characters to life.

What could Mercedes Lackey have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

Not given up on this series after book 3. If feels like her heart just wasn't in the last 2 books of this series, like she had already moved on and just wanted to get this over with. I wouldn't be surprised if she had hired a ghost writer to finish with the instruction: "Just get it done, whatever. I don't care."

Have you listened to any of Nick Podehl’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

No, I haven't yet. I would consider it though, as he did great with this series.

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

It was extremely disappointing!!! Even more so than book 4.

    Any additional comments?

I just can't believe that Lackey gave up on this series so easily. It was so terrible in the end that I won't even consider letting my kids start this series. They only have so much time and I don't want them wasting it on these books.

Mags, a young Herald trainee in Haven, the capital city of the kingdom of Valdemar, has talents not commonly found in Herald trainees.

Recognizing this, the King's Own Herald decides to train Mags as a spy in order to uncover the secrets of a mysterious new enemy who has taken an interest in Mags himself. Why is the even deeper mystery. The answers can only be found in the most unexpected corners of Mags' past...assuming he can live long enough to find them.

What would have made Redoubt better?

A new plot line, new writing, new ideas for books 4 & 5. As they stand now, they are terrible.

What could Mercedes Lackey have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

Not given up on this series part way through. It feels as if she was tired of dealing with these characters and just wanted to end it. Using flashbacks to fill most of the story is a copout.

What about Nick Podehl’s performance did you like?

Nick gave a solid performance. All voices and characters were spot on with the other books. Just feel sorry for him because he had to give up so much of his time on a sagging story.

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

    Extremely Disappointed!!!

    Any additional comments?

After 3 great books in this series, it feels like either Lackey just lost interest in writting this story, or she hired a ghost writer to finish the last 2 books without understanding the characters and their subleties. I should have finished reading after book 3 and made up my own ending - it would have been much more satisfying and less detached from the beginnings. Terrible.
