As A SEAL and combat medic, Mark served his country with valorous distinction for almost 25 years and survived some of the most dangerous combat actions imaginable. From the rigors of BUD/S training to the horrors of the battlefield, Battle Ready dramatically immerses the listener in the unique life of the elite warrior-medic who advances into combat with life-saving equipment in one hand and life-taking weapons in the other. It is also an uplifting human story that reveals how a young Hispanic American bootstrapped himself out of a life that promised a dead-end future by enlisting in the military.

If you are looking for a book with a lot of detailed battle scenes and excitement, this is not the book you want. This is a story about one man and his military career. There are a few "war stories" but in general, this is a life story. It's a good book, well performed, but not action packed.

If there’s been a theme in Justine Meade’s life, it’s loss. Her mother, her home, even her son. The one bright spot in her loss-filled life, the partner she could always count on, has always been Mack, her gray and black Sheltie - that is, until she is summoned back to her childhood home after more than 20 years away. Fiercely loyal, acutely perceptive and guided by a herd dog’s instinct, Mack has a way of bringing out the best in his humans.

Would you listen to The Dog Who Danced again? Why?

I rarely read or listen or watch anything more than once.

Who was your favorite character and why?

    The dog.

I really enjoyed the story. The ending seemed somewhat predictable, but at least it wasn't sad.
I didn't like how the author switched from current day to the past while telling the story. It did not seem to flow very well with so many time changes throughout the book.

The definitive, personal account of the deadliest season in the history of Everest by the acclaimed journalist and author of Into the Wild. Read by the author. Also, hear a Fresh Air interview with Krakauer conducted shortly after his ordeal.

Would you listen to Into Thin Air again? Why?

I don't think so. There were times when the story became bogged down with details of the individuals.

What did you like best about this story?

Detailed, first person explanation of what happened.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

Sad to think of people stepping over frozen dead bodies en route to the summit of Everest.

    Any additional comments?

The book has a lot of characters and it was difficult to follow along. The author read the book, which was good and bad. He was able to add emotion due to understanding the story intimately. However, he "read" the story instead of "telling" the story. This is perhaps the difference between a professional reader and an author.

  • Wild: From Lost to Found on the Pacific Crest Trail (Oprah's Book Club 2.0)

At 22, Cheryl Strayed thought she had lost everything. In the wake of her mother's death, her family scattered and her own marriage was soon destroyed. Four years later, with nothing more to lose, she made the most impulsive decision of her life: to hike the Pacific Crest Trail from the Mojave Desert through California and Oregon to Washington State - and to do it alone. She had no experience as a long-distance hiker, and the trail was little more than “an idea, vague and outlandish and full of promise.” But it was a promise of piecing back together a life that had come undone.

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Great story about finding oneself while hiking the Pacific Crest Trail.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Cheryl Strayed, the author, as she is the center of the story.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Makes me want to do a long distance hike.

    Any additional comments?

Although this is a coming of age tale, is does not come off as preachy or too deep to enjoy the journey. Strayed has a wonderful way of interspersing background stories with events on the trail. This seamless way of storytelling makes for an engaging story that is easy to listen to.

Here is an explosive book that takes us, for the first time, deep inside a shadowy, fascinating, and surreal world of unscrupulous doctors, anything-goes team directors, and athletes so relentlessly driven to succeed that they would do anything—and take any risk, physical, mental, or moral—to gain the edge they needed to win. The Secret Race is a riveting, courageous act of witness from a man who is as determined to reveal the hard truth about his sport as he once was to win the Tour de France.

Where does The Secret Race rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

I really enjoyed the story and was shocked by the behavior of the cyclists. If you think Armstrong is innocent, you must listen to this book. It is not a bitter tale, it is more a recounting of facts. Hamilton wants to tell the story because the truth lifts a burden from his soul.

Did Sean Runnette do a good job differentiating all the characters? How?

I did not like the narrator. His inflection was "off" at times and I found it difficult to listen to him. If the story had not been so captivating, I wouldn't have listened.
