It's hard to believe this woman accomplished so much in her life without Internet, computers, or modern transportation. This is an excellent book, and I loved the fact that so much of it was obtained from Catherine's own writings. Excellent book!
No. The reader read too slow, and I found my mind wandering at numerous places during the story. I've loved all the books by Lisa See, and I was so eager for this book to come out that I had it on my Outlook. But this story just seemed to lack something.
Maybe, but not from this reader.
janet Song did a great job on the previous books, but I really think the pace of the reading was the problem.
Not really. I should have waited for some of the other reviews to post.
I truly believe that Lisa See was trying to portray an important time in our history, and I did find that interesting. I can't really comment on how I would have felt if I had actually READ the book instead of listening to this reader. I'll have to check Amazon for other's opinions on the book. For me, it was the reader that ruined this book.
I give a book about 4 hours to get me. After that, if I still don't care about the characters, I'm done. I'm was bored bored bored.
Always take your cell phone! (Yes, I know that's more than 3 words)
The helicopter hovering over the boys near the end.
His voice and reading cadence was perfect. Kept the stress and fear at the correct limit.
Max, just to hear his read on the whole experience
I read/listened to this book because it was the book of the month recommendation from the Arizona Republic. Didn't really think it would appeal to me, but I literally sat in my car several times to listen to a scene play out. Excellent book. Very tightly written.
I typically have learned to stear away from Oprah books. They tend to be one theme, and I have found that tiresome! This book is still the theme of the whites mistreating the blacks, but the story is based on 2 real sisters and their life. It's fantastic. I deeply cared about all the characters, and I eagerly turned it on each day to see what happens next. For once Oprah got it right!
It's a historically based novel. The main characters actually exist-although this is a fiction based on these real characters.
Lettie! She was amazing, and I so admired her strong character.
Many parts made me laugh, but some parts also made me wince.
The readersr were also fantastic. They captured the voices expertly.
I have no idea as it wasn't even interesting.
Read the book just way too slow. I mean waaaayyyyy too slow.
Make me care about the characters. Frankly, I never ever cared about any of them.
I found the thought processes of the boy amazing. I found myself aching for the parents who find themselves in a similar situation.
I can't think of any other.
The young boy.
I listen in the car, so can't really answer this one.
I wasn't sure that I wanted to read/listen to this book. But I have a friend who has an autistic child. So I was curious. I must admit that I was amazed at the humor and heartbreak that was revealed in this book. I highly recommend it.
Okay, I've absolutely had it with these readers who have such thick accents that you can not understand them AT ALL in the car. Folks, audible is largely for those of us who spend a lot of time in the car, and this is the 3rd book that I've attempted to listen to this year where the choice of a reader was someone that I could not understand.
there are plenty of actors out there where English is their first language who can speak in an accent to add some flavor to the book. But we must be able to understand the reader.
Absolutely. I should have heeded the advise of other reviewers.
Choose a reader where English is their first language but who have the ability to add an accent.
I was unable to finish this book. A complete waste of my credit.
I downloaded this book as it was the monthly book of the month selection for the Arizona Republic, our local newspaper. Let's start with the reader. She whispers. She clearly forgot that most people listen in their cars, and cars have noise, air conditioning etc. Then her accent is so heavy that half the time, I could not even understand what she was saying. The next thing is that the F-bomb is used in almost every single sentence. I'm not a prude, but that is just not necessary.
Now, let's talk about the lack of a plot. I'm just starting book #2. Candidly, I'm waiting for my points to post and I'll just quit this horrible book. The main character is just boring. The plot is non-existent, and the Reader makes it even worse.
Cut the accent down and speak louder. I think the accent is great, but her's is so thick that it's just not understandable.
Accent too think, and she needs to speak up!
All of them. I did not ever relate or care about one character.
Save your points, and buy something else.
This was an amazing spy story. Even at the last 10 minutes of the book, I did not know how it would end.
My only regret was that I don't have copies of the recipes. Each chapter ends with a recipe and some of them sounded amazing.
Dominica. Very complicated character!
Nate! Would love to know him also.
The end. Can't discuss or it would give it away.
I wish audible would put a pdf. on the site that included the recipes.
There are numerous reviews about the story content, but this book is only being read because Dan Brown wrote it. Maybe! The book is so very patterened for nothing more than movie rights. Lots of action scenes, and unfortunately, I kept seeing Tom Hanks face. There is noting memorable about this book, and it's just plain boring.
Note yet sure.
None, the book was just too rediculous to mention. I'm sure I'll go to the movie as that is really what the book was written for. Action scenes, running scenes, falling scenes, etc. Not much in the way of content.
Huge disappointment. It's a formula book.
Save your money.
