John Paul Jones is more than a great sea story. Jones is a character for the ages. John Adams called him the "most ambitious and intriguing officer in the American Navy." The renewed interest in the Founding Fathers reminds us of the great men who made this country, but John Paul Jones teaches us that it took fighters as well as thinkers, men driven by dreams of personal glory as well as high-minded principle to break free of the past and start a new world. Jones' spirit was classically American.

Roommates Kelly and Chloe are enjoying their lives and their downtown Detroit loft just fine. Kelly is a Victoria's Secret catalog model. Chloe is an escort, until she decides to ditch her varied clientele in favor of a steady gig as girlfriend to eighty-four-year-old retired lawyer Tony Paradiso, a.k.a. Mr. Paradise.

    "Awful Reader"
    Overall

I would've thought it was impossible, but this reader makes Elmore Leonard dull. The great thing about Leonard's books is the dialog, but this guy makes everyone sound the same. He reads like an accountant going over a tax return. No, make that a tired and bored accountant.

The fictionalized account of Louisiana's colorful and notorious governor, Huey Pierce Long, All the King's Men follows the startling rise and fall of Willie Stark, a country lawyer in the Deep South of the 1930s. Beset by political enemies, Stark seeks aid from his right-hand man Jack Burden, who will bear witness to the cataclysmic unfolding of this very American tragedy.

This is a great book, a classic of American literature. I have read it before, but this audio version adds a whole new dimension. The reader captures the book perfectly, bringing extraordinary life and color to Warren's poetic words.

Carl works out of the Tulsa, Oklahoma, federal courthouse during the 1930s, the period of America's most notorious bank robbers: Dillinger, Baby Face Nelson...those guys.

The eternal conundrum about James Madison - a key framer of the U.S. Constitution, a formidable political figure, and a man of penetrating analytical intellect and tremendous foresight - is why, when he became chief executive, did he steer the ship of state with such an unsteady hand? In this examination of Madison's life and career, Garry Wills outlines the union of unfortunate circumstance, misplaced temperament, and outright poor judgment that bogged down Madison's presidency.

I like biographies but not this one. A very dull book about a very dull man, presented by a very dull reader. Warning: May cause drowsiness. Do not listen while driving an automobile or operating heavy equipment.
