In an Istanbul hotel, a deep source warns a CIA agent that Iran intends to kill a CIA station chief. Quickly, John Wells is called in to investigate, but before he can get far, the tip comes true. Which means that the next warning the source gives will be taken very seriously indeed. And it’s a big one. We’ve put a package on a ship from Dubai to the United States. A radioactive one. A bomb? Not yet. It’s a test run.

What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

Finishing the story. It was left in a very awkward place.

Would you recommend The Counterfeit Agent to your friends? Why or why not?

No. I like this series, but I would wait till the next one comes out.

Have you listened to any of George Guidall’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

    George was great...

If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from The Counterfeit Agent?

    None.

In the LAPD's Open-Unsolved Unit, not many murder victims die almost a decade after the crime. So when a man succumbs to complications from being shot by a stray bullet nine years earlier, Bosch catches a case in which the body is still fresh, but all other evidence is virtually nonexistent. Now Bosch and rookie Detective Lucia Soto, are tasked with solving what turns out to be a highly charged, politically sensitive case.

Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

Yes, a real audio 'page turner'.

    Any additional comments?

Despite other reviews panning the narrator, I thought Titus Welliver did a fine job on this book. Sure, I might prefer Len Cariou by a little bit, but Titus did a very nice, professional job on this book. The story was first rate Michael Connelly, and I still love this series.

    Thumbs way up!

But when Penn arrives, Tom denies ever making the request - keeping his secrets for another day. The emergency hurls Penn back to a chilling case in Houston, where he worked in a DA's office known as the "death factory", which sent more killers to death row than any other in America.

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

I liked this one, but found it too short for the money.

What about David Ledoux’s performance did you like?

Some reviewers have panned David compared to Dick Hill. I thought he held his own, and may fit the pace and style of Iles' books better.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes, and since it is so short, I almost did.

    Any additional comments?

While this was priced at somewhat of a discount compared to full length books, it still costs a full credit. If it had cost about $5, I would have been completely satisfied.

  • Light of the World: A Dave Robicheaux Novel, Book 20

In Light of the World, sadist and serial killer Asa Surrette narrowly escaped the death penalty for the string of heinous murders. But following a series of damning articles written by Dave Robicheaux’s daughter Alafair about possible other crimes committed by Surette, the killer escapes from a prison transport van and heads to Montana - where an unsuspecting Dave happens to have gone to take in the sweet summer air, accompanied by Alafair, his wife Molly, faithful partner Clete, and Clete’s newfound daughter, Gretchen Horowitz.

Is there anything you would change about this book?

It is too long. Burke could have taken a bit more time and edited this one a bit more. It feels like a rough draft, rambling around without a point, with too many loose ends. Not as tight and well written as most of the series.

What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)

Weird ending. Too many characters just stop doing anything for the last ten minutes of the book.

    Any additional comments?

While I still enjoyed the book, the themes are getting repetitive and tired. I am glad it took place in Montana, but it wasn't that accurate. All the final action seems to take place near Flathead Lake, yet he refers to the same sheriff as in Missoula (Flathead Lake is part in Lake County, part in Flathead County: different sheriffs).

Too many people die in these books for it to be realistic. I didn't add up the total death toll, but it is high. Too much gore, more than is needed. There are as many murders in this one book as Missoula would see in a year.

Yet I still enjoy Burke's prose. It is poetic and beautiful, and Patton's wonderful narration makes it sing. Despite my complaints, I am still glad I listened to this book.

For months, Mitch Rapp has been steadily working his way through a list of men, bullet by bullet. With each kill, the tangled network of monsters responsible for the slaughter of 270 civilians becomes increasingly clear. He is given his next target: a plump Libyan diplomat who is prone to drink and is currently in Paris without a single bodyguard. Rapp finds him completely unprotected and asleep in his bed. With confidence in his well-honed skills and conviction of the man’s guilt, he easily sends a bullet into the man’s skull. But in the split second it takes the bullet to leave the silenced pistol, everything changes.

What did you like best about Kill Shot? What did you like least?

Seemed a little shallower than some of his past work. Ended too quickly and unbelievably. Very good narration, and I still enjoy this series.

Would you be willing to try another book from Vince Flynn? Why or why not?

Yes. I like the character, the narration, and the series.
