  • Oryx and Crake

    • UNABRIDGED (10 hrs and 29 mins)
    • By Margaret Atwood
    • Narrated By Campbell Scott
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

As the story opens, Snowman is sleeping in a tree, mourning the loss of his beloved Oryx and his best friend Crake, and slowly starving to death. How did everything fall apart so quickly? Why is he left with nothing but his haunting memories? Alone except for the green-eyed Children of Crake, he explores the answers to these questions in the double journey he takes - into his own past, and back to Crake's high-tech bubble-dome, where the Paradice Project unfolded and the world came to grief.

    "Brilliant Science Fiction"

A brilliant work of science fiction by Margaret Atwood. This story is a future vision based on the evolution of genetic sciences. It revolves around two childhood friends, Jimmy and Glenn, later "Snowman" and "Crake," and their mutual obsession with a beautiful Asian girl, named "Oryx." The character development is superb, particularly that of Jimmy/Snowman, and Oryx. Every word in this story is important; there are no wasted moments. This novel elevates the form of science fiction to a new level. I highly recommend this audiobook.

    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

With careful planning, Claudia Kincaid stages her own secret live-in at New York's Metropolitan Museum of Art, taking along her nine-year-old brother because he is a miser and will have money. What happens to Claudia and Jamie prove greater than either had bargained for.

    "Loved It!"

This book is a classic that I enjoyed as a child, and again as an Audible book as an adult. This audiobook benefits from a tremendous narrator who maintains her narrative in character-specific voices. Its a remarkable story of two children, brother and sister, who escape their tedious Connecticut home life and run away to Manhattan to hide out in the Metropolitan Museum of Art. As a child who grew up in Connecticut, this was the secret escape we all dreamed of! Highly recommended.

  • Tour of Duty: John Kerry and the Vietnam War

    • ABRIDGED (5 hrs and 22 mins)
    • By Douglas Brinkley
    • Narrated By Douglas Brinkley

Written by acclaimed historian Douglas Brinkley, this is the first full-scale, intimate account of John Kerry's Navy career. Brinkley has drawn on extensive interviews with everyone who knew Kerry well in Vietnam. Kerry also entrusted to Brinkley his letters home and his voluminous "War Notes": journals, notebooks, and personal reminiscences written during and shortly after the war.

"An Excellent Introduction to John Kerry"

This title is an engaging introduction to the life of a fascinating political talent, John Kerry. It traces his upbringing, through his years at Yale, to his decision to volunteer to serve in the Navy during the Vietnam War. His tour of duty is well covered, covering both positive and negative aspects. The dualistic nature of Kerry's service is detailed: how he served in a patriotic manner, yet found the goals of the war to be questionable. The biography further covers Kerry's years in the Vietnam Veterans Against the War group, his testimony before Congress, and his early attempts at public office. After listening to this audiobook, I am convinced that Kerry is destined to be our next President.

  • Moneyball: The Art of Winning an Unfair Game

    • ABRIDGED (5 hrs and 48 mins)
    • By Michael Lewis
    • Narrated By Michael Lewis

Moneyball is a quest for something that money can't buy: the secret of success in baseball. The real jackpot is a cache of numbers collected by a brotherhood of baseball enthusiasts: software engineers, statisticians, Wall Street analysts, and physics professors. These numbers prove that the traditional measure of success for players and teams are fatally flawed. This information has been around for years, and nobody paid it any mind. And then came Billy Beane, General Manager of the Oakland A's.

    "Brilliant Baseball Literature"

Being an avid baseball fan, as well as an avid reader, I've read all of the classics of baseball literature. This book ranks up there with Ted Williams' "My Turn at Bat" as one of the greatest works of baseball literature. I was fascinated with the excerpts published in the NY Times Magazine, and found the full text even more compelling.

As a baseball fan, and resident of the Bay Area, I've been fascinated with Billy Beane, the GM of the Oakland A's. I've wondered how this small market team, with one of the smallest budgets in baseball, could manage to field one of the most competitive teams, year after year, in a world where market forces drive top market teams to drive up spending quicker than a global arms race. This audio book explains it.

The Oakland A's unique strategy of drafting players that fit a particular mold (i.e., either hitters with high on base percentage, or 'mature' college pitchers without blistering stuff), that other teams shun, is revealed in Moneyball.

I highly recommend this audio book to all serious baseball fans who want to understand the highly successful formula of the Oakland A's. Enjoy!

  • Living History

    • ABRIDGED (7 hrs and 3 mins)
    • By Hillary Rodham Clinton
    • Narrated By Hillary Rodham Clinton

You've probably heard clips from Senator Clinton's interview with Barbara Walters. But now you can listen to her full account of her years in the White House. Hillary Clinton vividly describes her pain over her husband's betrayal with Monica Lewinky saying that former President Bill Clinton lied to her about the relationship until the weekend before he admitted the nature of it to a grand jury.

    "Very Worthwhile Audiobook"

Senator Clinton's "Living History" offers a very revealing look into the life of our former, oftentimes enigmatic, First Lady. This autobiographical text reaches beyond the realm of political treatise, into the deeply personal aspects of this fascinating woman.

Narrated by the Senator herself, this audio book provides great insight into her life. By beginning with the evolution of her thought, from Young Republican and head of the 'Fabian' fan club at her high school, into a very driven and self posessed young woman. Her formative years at Wellesley are described with much care, and help us understand the formation of her character.

Her descriptions of meeting Bill Clinton, their courtship, and later move to Arkansas are fascinating, as well as their meteoric rise to the White House. Hillary Clinton's deep love for her daughter, Chelsea, is warmly expressed in the narrative.

I highly recommend this audio book. I listened over the course of a weekend, and could not turn it off. Enjoy!
