A troubled World War I veteran races across the frozen steppe of 1930's Ukraine to save a child from a shadowy killer with unthinkable plans. Luka is a war veteran who now wants nothing more than to have a quiet life with his family. His village has, so far, remained hidden from the advancing Soviet brutality. But everything changes the day a stranger arrives, pulling a sled bearing a terrible cargo. In the chaos, a little girl has vanished, and Luka is the only man with the skills to find the stolen child and her kidnapper.

I have been telling people about this book ever since I started listening - and have told everyone to LISTEN rather than read it. This narrator was brilliant and brought Dan Smith's amazing story up to another level. I didn't want to miss a sentence in this book and if I thought I had, I went back. Tragic and yet hopeful. Painful and yet inspiring. One of the best books EVER from Audible.

The killer's methods are terrifying. He stalks the basements and underground passageways of New York City. He tattoos his victims' flesh with cryptic messages, using a tattoo gun loaded with poison, resulting in an agonizing, painful death. When a connection is made to the Bone Collector - the serial killer who terrorized New York more than a decade ago - Lincoln Rhyme and Amelia Sachs are immediately drawn into the case.

Huge Lincoln Rhyme & Jeffery Deaver fan. I'll buy the next one in the series but if it's not better, then I'll give up. The last couple just haven't been anywhere near as good as the earlier ones. I like the characters but if you didn't know the characters, this book would be completely disjointed. I'll remain hopeful, however.

Ten years ago, six-year-old Catalina Mateo hid under the porch of her family home while a knife butchered her mother and a bullet killed her father. Now a rough-sleeping orphan, Cat arrives at the house of Detective Jonathan Stride, pleading for protection. Drenched in the icy waters of Lake Superior, she claims to have narrowly escaped a cold-blooded killer. Stride's raw instinct is to protect Cat, whose late parents' case - and his personal guilt associated with it - still sends a shiver down his spine. As a result, he takes the troubled teenager under his wing.

HUGE Jonathan Stride fan, but this one was not his best in this series. I'll still buy the next one though. some good parts, no question, but it just didn't hold me like the others have. Still worth a credit.

On the 85th floor of a glittering high-rise in Los Angeles, Robert Tarza steps into the lobby of the Marbury Marfan law firm to discover his partner Simon Rafer lying in a pool of blood - an ornate dagger plunged into his back. Robert had worked with Simon for decades, and their relationship was fraught with conflict. But he never imagined he would wind up as the prime suspect for his colleague’s murder. As the evidence stacks up against him with frightening speed, he quickly falls from his respected position to that of a criminal dragged through the tabloids.

I bought it and thought seriously about returning it but I double-timed it because I kept hoping it would get better. The problem was the characters (not that the plot was that great either). ARGH! Not a likable one in the bunch and just irritating. Pass on this book. There are too many other good ones to choose from. This was a dud.

What does it take to be secure in our sense of belonging and self-worth? We may hustle to attain this security through achievements, meeting expectations, or repeating affirmations to ourselves - but Dr. Brené Brown's research has shown there is ultimately one obstacle to our sense of worthiness. “Shame is the barrier,” she teaches, “and building shame resilience is how we overcome it.”

I needed this info TODAY and am thankful for Audible's double time option. I sat outside and listened and slowed it down sometimes when I couldn't take notes fast enough.

This is life-changing material. Wish I had had it long ago. The difference between shame and guilt. How to be shame resilient... So much here. Just incredible.

A family of four murdered in their hotel room. A single mother and her boyfriend both stabbed to death. A sordid history of violent crimes, repeated over and over - but decades apart. Olivia Barker is a therapist with no connection to the murders. But she has heard things. Stories that keep her up at night. Details that only a killer would know. A killer who could be one of her patients…Olivia has no proof for her suspicions. But as the body count rises, so do her fears. A rock is thrown through her window, her car tires are slashed, a chilling message is scrawled on her bathroom mirror.

Parts of this book were great and other parts, I thought, "Good grief. Get on with it." The narrator was good although there were many mispronunciations, which is fairly unusual for Audible books. I finished it just now, at double speed. I would try another Kevin O'Brien book because of the parts of this book that were good.

Now, Dutton is thrilled to introduce him to America.

I tested out this book since it's part of a series and it had gotten good reviews by and large. Well, I'm a major fan now! Have already purchased the next and have others in my wish list. The characters were so marvelously developed - such a range of different types. Can't wait to start the next one in the series this coming week!

The only thing I'm worried about is that there's a different narrator. So sorry that Erik Davies didn't continue. I thought he was ideal for this role. I'll be hopeful, however.

I would love to know the story behind Brian Freeman deciding to make this a novella instead of weaving it into another full novel. Was it something he wrote and it didn't fit in another novel or he just created this as a separate story? Whatever it was, it was EXCELLENT! And it will barely tide me over until his next book is out! I hope Joe Barrett always narrates his books. I can't imagine anyone else in the "role."

Since Devil in the White City is what I'm measuring his books against, that is a TOUGH act to follow. However, I learned a great deal from this book and enjoyed it and am looking tonight for another one of Erik Larson's books. I'm convinced that I like him and the way he creates a story!
