Probably. But the emotional roller coaster was exhausting-- so not for a while. The characters are built so well, that I even disregarded my totally irrational but debilitating fear of zombies, and listened to it all in ONE day.
No, but I will be checking them out for sure!! The performance was astounding. I never got confused between characters, and she attuned to the emotional turmoil within each character flawlessly.
If anything, please at least READ this book. I felt that listening to this book made it resonate even more with me. I found myself feeling despair, disgust, overwhelming tenderness, and anger with every bit of this novel. I never saw anything coming, and that made the experience even more intense. I was disappointed with the ending, not because it didn't fit well, or was cut off too soon. No, I was disappointed because I loved and hated every character. I felt betrayed along with some characters too. If I have so many emotions throughout a book, I know that this is one I will recommend endlessly to everyone.
Tim Curry is one of my all time favorite performers. He has such a distinct voice and character, I respect him and love most of his performances because of it. This is no exception! I have not experienced an audiobook to date like I experienced this one. I loved how everything he read had me enraptured. I find myself generally zoning out when a narrator is setting the scene, and have even used a few books as effective sleep aids. But oh my goodness, I made a mistake trying to use this novel as a similar aid. I couldn't fall asleep, it was too riveting. In fact, I felt my heart racing and found myself saying "No...watch out!" During a few particularly dangerous situations for Sabriel. So safe to say, I didn't fall asleep for a while after that!
His reading brought this novel to life. I'd heard of Sabriel but had not given it much thought until I saw Tim Curry was the narrator. It is 100% worth a credit. In fact, I think I'll actually listen to this book again. Something I never do.
Try it out. I'm not a YA reader, and this didn't feel like a YA novel at all. I previously read a review describing at such-- I thoroughly disagree! So don't let anything get in the way of you enjoying a fantastic experience in Sabriel.
This book had me the whole time. That seems to be happening more and more rarely, so this was a treasure. My only issue was Hannah Norris' frequent butchering of what sounded like it was trying to be middle eastern. Sometimes the R rolling was so atrocious I winced. If a narrator is able to maintain an accent, then by all means-- I love them! Differences in dialects welcome too! But Norris would drop, pick up, and overdo the accent frequently.
Cartwright was fantastic in his narration so I gave the performance 3 stars solely for his ability.
The rest was A+ in my opinion, so I was able to listen to the full book without losing all the ambiance of the novel.
And in all honesty, it was a cute story. But that's just it-- a story. The novel didn't resonate with me, and in all honesty it didn't rate high for me. I felt I had heard this story before, and probably have with the cumulation of all the YA books I read as a young teen. I think I'd have really loved this book if I read it when I was 13 or so. It was easy to predict, and I found enjoyment in guessing whodunit and being right. So, I won't read the sequel.
I was in to this novel. I really liked the magic system, and how the perfection if the Golds isn't overwhelming as the author unravels the dark underbelly of the class system. It's a great novel, and the fact that I felt I had just read a better hunger games didn't effect my overall enjoyment. I look forward to another.
I loved the beginning but pre-climax to the conclusion of the novel, it became quite predictable. I found the premise intriguing but if the novel loses the intensity of the beginning of the novel-- I'm over it. I'll read her coming sequel and hope the story picks up again for me
I did listen to this. I didn't end up liking it myself. I had a hard time keeping all the details of the novel straight. It may have been due to my gradual disinterest, or it may not. I appreciated the idea and plot, but just didn't like the writing.
Wow. I am so happy I delved into Sanderson's writing more. I really loved the setup of this book, the characters in this book, and pretty much all of this book. I had thought that this book would be a rehash of all fantasy clichés, but was exceptionally surprised!! I listened to this novel pretty much nonstop, and was so enthrall end that I found my heart ache a bit when it ended. If you're up for a long but fun listen, please try this book! The magic system is so interesting! I find myself wishing to try it firsthand!! I'm sorry Mr Sanderson, for not giving you a chance in the beginning. I've since learned the errors of my ways.
I did not read the print version, but may feel differently if I had.
The ending was guessable. I could already see the direction the book was heading.
I really like his narration, I feel he does a great job keeping the tonal inflections consistent between characters.
Not necessarily. As it wore on, I did listen in longer intervals, but in one sitting it'd be too much.
It is a fun idea, with good characters. However the characters lack depth and their motives before and after their actions seems a second thought. The world building was not done very well. The different species and the idea of "thorn" is cool, but was not developed. I was left wondering why characters did what they did, and weary of the nonstop battle scenes that didn't allow for much character development.
Probably would have liked to have spent my time on another book, honestly.
Not especially. I got bored with the story and honestly fell asleep often. At least the narrator has a soothing voice!
Both were slow, so I suppose so.
No. The relationships between characters seemed flippantly described and the characters had no depth to them overall.
Not my cup of tea. Main issue was with the character development. Severely lacking
