Nothing can mend a broken heart quite like family. Sherry has struggled all her life to understand who she is, where she comes from, and, most important, why her mother slapped her cheek one summer afternoon. The incident has haunted Sherry, and it causes her to dig into her family's past. Like many family histories, it is fractured and stubbornly reluctant to reveal its secrets. But Sherry is determined to know the full story. In a few days' time, her extended family will gather for a reunion, and Sherry sets off across the country with her mother, Dumpling, to join them.

    Story
What did you like best about this story?

The writing is unvarnished and not sentimental, even with the strong imagery the author invokes.

Which character – as performed by Robin Miles – was your favorite?

Dumpling- she is the true center to the story, although it isn't truly evident until near the end.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

This book brought tears to my eyes on more than one occasion. The choices the characters were forced to make and then live with, were horrific. Even more so were the choices the characters never had.

    Story
Would you consider the audio edition of Out of Breath to be better than the print version?

I have not read the print version, but thought the narrator for this entire series was excellent!

What does Kate Rudd bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

She brought out the personalities of each character in her intonation and pacing, breathing life into their words.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

The entire series continues to resonate and move me, even several days after finishing the last book. It was not always an easy listen and I often found myself frustrated by the actions of some of the characters. However, their actions were true to their experiences and motivations.
