  • The White Tiger: A Novel

    • UNABRIDGED (8 hrs and 5 mins)
    • By Aravind Adiga
    • Narrated By John Lee
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

Balram Halwai is a complicated man. Servant. Philosopher. Entrepreneur. Murderer. Balram tells us the terrible and transfixing story of how he came to be a success in life - having nothing but his own wits to help him along. Through Balram's eyes, we see India as we've never seen it before: the cockroaches and the call centers, the prostitutes and the worshippers, the water buffalo and, trapped in so many kinds of cages that escape is (almost) impossible, the white tiger.

With a charisma as undeniable as it is unexpected, Balram teaches us that religion doesn't create morality and money doesn't solve every problem.

Mark P. Furlong says: "Entertaining, thought-provoking, darkly funny"
    "Very good read"

    Excellent book.

Very well narrated by Mr. Lee.

  • Gone to Texas

    • UNABRIDGED (5 hrs and 36 mins)
    • By Forrest Carter
    • Narrated By Ed Sala

A hard-hitting western, it is sharp as a rock-strewn canyon trail. Josie Wales was once a gentle farmer, tending apple orchards and living in Missouri with his young wife and child. But his world was shattered when he returned home one day to find his cabin and family reduced to charred skeletons. Now a loner following his own outlaw code, Josie is headed for a land that might offer him a new life, if not new hope. Punctuated with the crack of pistol fire, Gone to Texas is Western fiction at its best. Despite their roughness, you’ll find yourself drawn to the scar-faced Josie....

"The movie "The Outlaw Josey Wales" is this book."
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Very good book if you like the movie

What was one of the most memorable moments of Gone to Texas?

So many! My favorite is probably when he kills the two mountain men in the trading post.

What about Ed Sala’s performance did you like?

Very well read. It's a little odd to hear Josey speak in a different voice than Clint's at first. But you get used to it. The story is very different in some ways and the same in others. So the character of Josey Wales is a little different.

Who was the most memorable character of Gone to Texas and why?

Josey Wales because he triumphed over the odds.

    Any additional comments?

A must read if you love the movie, and the history of that time, like I do.

  • Don Quixote

    • UNABRIDGED (34 hrs and 42 mins)
    • By Miguel de Cervantes
    • Narrated By Julian Reinoso

Published in two volumes a decade apart, Don Quixote is the most influential work of literature to emerge from the Spanish Golden Age and perhaps the entire Spanish literary canon. As a founding work of modern Western literature, it regularly appears at the top of lists of the greatest works of fiction ever published.

Maury Davis says: "Narration difficult to understand"
    "Narration difficult to understand"

I understand that this book was originally written in Spanish. The reason for translating it into English is so we English speakers can understand and enjoy this great story.

The narrator's thick Spanish accent and poor pronunciation of English words makes it very difficult to understand what he is saying all of the time.

I find myself having to rewind a great deal to catch words and phrases. (And this is a long book.)

When I listen to narrations of Tolstoy and Dostoevsky I listen to a pleasant, understandable English accent. The audio publishers felt no need to hire a narrator with a thick Russian accent and poor English pronunciation skills.

I just listened to "The White Tiger". An excellent book. Takes place in India. The Narrator, Mr Lee, narrates with an excellent Indian accent to give us a sense that we are listening to an Indian story. He does so with totally understandable English pronunciation.

There is no crime to speak with an accent, if you have excellent English pronunciation skills. This narrator does not.
