Having done field work in New Guinea for more than 30 years, Jared Diamond presents the geographical and ecological factors that have shaped the modern world. From the viewpoint of an evolutionary biologist, he highlights the broadest movements both literal and conceptual on every continent since the Ice Age, and examines societal advances such as writing, religion, government, and technology.

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

    Maybe.. if interested in Anthropology

Would you be willing to try another book from Jared Diamond? Why or why not?

No. Jared Diamond tends to pontificate on and not get to his point

If you were to make a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

People who start off with more end up with more.

    Any additional comments?

This book has some real gems of observations and historical stories, only the author drones on and on and belabors the answer to his self imposed questions.

A hard-hitting western, it is sharp as a rock-strewn canyon trail. Josie Wales was once a gentle farmer, tending apple orchards and living in Missouri with his young wife and child. But his world was shattered when he returned home one day to find his cabin and family reduced to charred skeletons. Now a loner following his own outlaw code, Josie is headed for a land that might offer him a new life, if not new hope. Punctuated with the crack of pistol fire, Gone to Texas is Western fiction at its best. Despite their roughness, you’ll find yourself drawn to the scar-faced Josie....

Maury Davis says: "The movie "The Outlaw Josey Wales" is this book."

This first book of the Holding Their Own series, A Story of Survival, is set in the year 2015, when the world is burdened by the second Great Depression. The United States, already weakened by internal strife, becomes the target of an international terror plot. A series of attacks results in thousands of casualties and disables the country's core infrastructure. The combination of economic hardship and the staggering blow of the terror attacks results in a collapse of the government.

What would have made Holding Their Own: A Story of Survival better?

Gotten a professional editor or a far better one

What did you like best about this story?

Very interesting, realistic plot without super human acts or leaps of faiths to keep the story flowing

Who would you have cast as narrator instead of D. Allen?

Any 1st grade English teacher from story time would have been better.

If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from Holding Their Own: A Story of Survival?

    The Epilogue

    Any additional comments?

Look the narrator and the sound quality for that matter is by far the worst I have ever heard since listening to audio books some 20 years or so. Sounds like old D. Allen was in a basement with his cassette tape recorder purchased from the five and dime. (really bad) However the book itself is a great read. I checked the commits on amazon and it gets really high marks if you read it yourself apparently..

Over all if you liked Patriots by James Wesley Rawles but had issue with its characters being that overwhelming prepared and armed to the teeth then this one is a cool breeze of realism.

The gigantic comet had slammed into Earth, forging earthquakes a thousand times too powerful to measure on the Richter scale, tidal waves thousands of feet high. Cities were turned into oceans; oceans turned into steam. It was the beginning of a new Ice Age and the end of civilization. But for the terrified men and women chance had saved, it was also the dawn of a new struggle for survival--a struggle more dangerous and challenging than any they had ever known....

DJM says: "Good story from front to back"
    "Classic"
    Overall

A bit dated on the tech side but a must read for the Classic sci-fi fan boy...
