While civil war looms in Oz, a tetchy oracle named Yackle prepares for death. Before her final hour, a figure known as Brrr - the Cowardly Lion - arrives searching for information about Elphaba Thropp, the Wicked Witch of the West. Abandoned as a cub, his path from infancy is no Yellow Brick Road. In the wake of laws that oppress talking Animals, he avoids a jail sentence by agreeing to serve as a lackey to the warmongering Emperor of Oz.

Great story & narration-- but PLEASE -- NO MUSIC!!!! It's so distracting it really messes up the flow of the story. It is unnecessary and even disturbing. The story is great, well written, typical McGuire brilliance, nuance and humor. Narrator very very good! The music interspersed is the only downside to this audio book.

From the moment she's struck by lightening as a baby, it is clear that Mary Anning is marked for greatness. On the windswept, fossil-strewn beaches of the English coast, she learns that she has "the eye"-and finds what no one else can see. When Mary uncovers an unusual fossilized skeleton in the cliffs near her home, she sets the religious fathers on edge, the townspeople to vicious gossip, and the scientific world alight.

I was so entraptured by the story of Mary Anning and Elizabeth Philpot. The fact that they are real life characters made this book so much more intrigueing and entertaining. The narrators do a fantastic job of depicting the characters. A great book, highly recommended!

Why we think it’s a great listen: How do you one-up a book that’s already a global literary phenomenon? Hire Simon Vance to (flawlessly) interpret the loves, lives, and murders of Sweden’s cold and secret-filled world. A spellbinding amalgam of murder mystery, family saga, love story, and financial intrigue. It's about the disappearance 40 years ago of Harriet Vanger, a young scion of one of the wealthiest families in Sweden.

Couldn't stop listening. I did have some trouble initially w/ Swedish names, but then got use to it. Kudos to brilliant performer Simon Vance, whose narration brings all the characters to life. The plot and subplots just kept coming and never disappointed.

Larry Ott and Silas “32” Jones were unlikely boyhood friends. Larry was the child of lower middle-class white parents, Silas the son of a poor, single, black mother - their worlds as different as night and day. Yet a special bond developed between them in Chabot, Mississippi. But within a few years, tragedy struck. In high school, a girl who lived up the road from Larry had gone to the drive-in movie with him and nobody had seen her again.

Ann says: "Excellent story, terrific narrator."
    "Should become a classic!"

One of the best books of my summer! Franklin's evocative imagery of the South is perfect and unrelenting. His characters are brilliant. Kernely's narration pulls you into each character, each scene. One of the best narrators I've heard here at Audible. The main characters, Larry & Silas, portray lives that are heartbreaking, yet in the end, redemptive. The story is compelling and takes the reader on a poignant, sad, chilling, and disturbing ride. I did not want this book to end! This is a must listen, and a must read!

Why we think it’s a great listen: The most celebrated performance in all of Audible’s history, The Help has nearly 2,000 5-star reviews from your fellow listeners. We hear the print book’s not bad, either. In pitch-perfect voices, Kathryn Stockett creates three extraordinary women whose determination to start a movement of their own forever changes a town, and the way women - mothers, daughters, caregivers, friends - view one another.

Jan says: "What a great surprise!"
    "Amazing readers/amazing story!!!!!"
    Overall

One of THE best books I've read/listened to in years. The readers are tops-- it's rare that you find both a great story and great readers in electronic books--- The Help has both! Stockett is brillant. And all of the readers are simply gifted!
This should be mandatory listening in ALL southern schools.
