I found this biography well written. The facts of Rita Hayworth's life are public knowledge.
Her life is described with truth and compassion. I enjoyed it even though the outcome is inevitable.
I had hoped this Mia Farrow would touch on her famous mother, Sinatra and her humanitarian efforts. I found the book the writings of a still bitter woman. I am sorry I wasted my time and money. If I wanted to read about Woody Allen I would have purchased a biography of Woody Allen. Skip this one. Not enough good to outweigh the bad.
I have listened to this book too many times to count. It is heartbreaking. Carole Radziwill tells the story of John Kennedy Jr's last flight. What draws me to this book is Carole's reading of her own story. She was a very close friend of John's wife. She and her husband the son of Lee Radzwill were enjoying the perfect life, a happy life. The he was stricken with Cancer. I don't want to tell you everything but this is a beautiful book. At one time I was a grief counselor trying to help people deal with loss. I Will admire Carole forever because of the things she did right and how like all of us who loose someone, what not to do. No it is not chock full of Kennedy stories, it is the story of 4 very good friends. So worth the listen.
I had just seen his HBO special and really liked it. When I started listening the story became a totally different animal. I no know it takes Crystal's stge movement and faces to mke it work. I have always liked Billy Crystal but see him on stage. The book is dry, slow and I wish I had not purchased it. Sorry Billy.
This is an intelligent, insightful funny book. When I purchased it I though it was light and easy to listen to book. Within 10 minutes I had restarted the story. Phyllis Theroux is a woman my age. In understand why she journals. I do the same. I can't express enough the wit and intelligence of this writer, who is also the narrator. It is her life, the good, the bad, the ugly. I have listened to it twice to pick up the literary references . For now it is my default favorite. I highly recommend The Journal Keeper.
Even though this book is not read by Hitch you can still here his voice in every word. His stories are/were always entertaining, very funny, educational and filled with his amazement of his life. As he said in his interview with Charlie Rose "I am leaving the party earlier than I though I would, much earlier. I also highly recommend Hitch 22. It is read by Hitch and you will listen over and over.
This small book is magical. Anyone who has lost a family member will say "oh the same thing happened to me." Having lost too many people in my family I found this book at times funny, because I did the same thing, sad, not maudlin and educational. I have always liked Joan Didion's books but this one is my favorite. She recalls the small details one would experience after a death. She could not give his shoes away because he might come back and need them. That is a perfect example of magical thinking whether you are thinking like a sociologist or a psychologist or have lost a loved one.
Joan Didion's book Blue Nights is about the death of her daughter. I think of them as companion books but not alike. Read A Year of Magical Thinking. Sometimes it will make you smile.
I enjoyed the book The Hollywood. There are a lot of great stories mentioning familiar and famous movie stars, Cary Grant among them. Michael Caine is as entertaining in the audio book as he is on film. I listened to this book during a run of insomnia and I could not only hear him smiling but visualize him there talking to me. You will not learn anything new or scandalous here. You will be entertained by a great actor telling great stories.
Do not bother with this book. A few facts and then the narrator does the Ingrid Bergman voice. That ruined it for me. From what I have read about Ingrid Bergman this book is bad fiction.
What can I say, who does not like Dick Cavett. He goes through his early years, his show biz years and his walks and talks with William Styron, Art Buchwald about their depress. Very entertaining.
