The Goldfinch is a haunted odyssey through present-day America and a drama of enthralling force and acuity. It begins with a boy. Theo Decker, a 13-year-old New Yorker, miraculously survives an accident that kills his mother. Abandoned by his father, Theo is taken in by the family of a wealthy friend. Bewildered by his strange new home on Park Avenue, disturbed by schoolmates who don't know how to talk to him, and tormented above all by his unbearable longing for his mother, he clings to one thing that reminds him of her: a small, mysteriously captivating painting that ultimately draws Theo into the underworld of art.

This is one depressing listen! Although well performed, the story itself goes from one disaster to another, and just when there is some glimmer of things improving for "Potter" , the world collapses on him again. Not recommended for anyone on antidepressants who reads for escape.

Myron Bolitar has always dreamed about the femme fatale walking into his office and asking for help. The woman standing in his doorway has killer curves all right: She’s eight months pregnant, which kind of ruins the fantasy. Former tennis star Suzze T and her rock star husband, Lex, are both clients, and over the years Myron has negotiated his share of contracts for the power pair. But now Lex has disappeared and Suzze is in tears, fearing the online rumors questioning the baby’s paternity have driven away Lex.

If you’ve listened to books by Harlan Coben before, how does this one compare?

I consider it weak....Myron has burned out in this book, and it shows, and I don't care for his "mellow" or more likely exhausted persona

Which character – as performed by Steven Weber – was your favorite?

    Myron's dad

Evelyn has been married to her husband for 40 years - 40 years since he slipped off her first wedding ring and put his own in its place. Delphine has seen both sides of love - the ecstatic, glorious highs of seduction, and the bitter, spiteful fury that descends when it’s over. James, a paramedic who works the night shift, knows his wife’s family thinks she could have done better; while Kate, partnered with Dan for a decade, has seen every kind of wedding - beach weddings, backyard weddings, castle weddings - and has vowed never, ever, to have one of her own.

Tifani says: "This story required some brain exercise."

The Caribbean, 1665. A remote colony of the English Crown, the island of Jamaica holds out against the vast supremacy of the Spanish empire. Port Royal, its capital, is a cutthroat town of taverns, grog shops, and bawdy houses. In this steamy climate there's a living to be made, a living that can end swiftly by disease - or by dagger. For Captain Charles Hunter, gold in Spanish hands is gold for the taking, and the law of the land rests with those ruthless enough to make it.

If you could sum up Pirate Latitudes in three words, what would they be?

    Brains, Brawn, and DANGER!

What other book might you compare Pirate Latitudes to and why?

Micro, also Crichton....danger fun, and technology from a different angle

Have you listened to any of John Bedford Lloyd’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

    No previous

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Brutality of life then and there...often hard to take.

Michael Crichton never disappoints....sorry his library is complete.

Would you listen to The Host again? Why?

Yes, in a year or two...amazing concept, characters.

What did you like best about this story?

I loved the depth of the society in the caves, the essential human nature best illustrated through the eyes of an alien species. I was sad to finish the Twilight series a few years ago.....though I'm well past the target audience for Meyer's work, I enjoy a complex fairy tale with plenty of heart. I would say Host is more developed work in a much shorter format, and I enjoyed that, too. I'm sure there's a sequel...haven't checked to see if it's out yet, and I plan to check out the movie, too!

Have you listened to any of Kate Reading’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

My first by Kate Reading...a masterful performance! She was Wanderer without shortchanging the many varied humans in the story

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

"The eyes aren't the whole story"

    Any additional comments?

Love Audible....great choices at bargain basement prices...just recently renewed for a year -great option, thank you!
The ease of listening on iPad or iPod, and the "sync-ability"between them is awesome as I listen on one at home and the other on the road.
Downloads are hassle-free, and knowing they stay in my account without clogging up my devices is great... I can have any at the touch of a button
