With a career, a boyfriend, and a loving family, Piper Kerman barely resembles the reckless young woman who delivered a suitcase of drug money 10 years ago. But that past has caught up with her. Convicted and sentenced to 15 months at the infamous federal correctional facility in Danbury, Connecticut, the well-heeled Smith College alumna is now inmate #11187-424 - one of the millions of women who disappear "down the rabbit hole" of the American penal system.

They were women whose lives began in slavery, who weathered the Civil War, and who grappled with the contradictions of emancipation through the turbulent early years of the 20th century. Through it all, they fought to unite their family and forge success on their own terms.

Where does Cane River rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

The story was thought-provoking in many ways.

Would you be willing to try another book from Lalita Tademy? Why or why not?

Possibly. This storyline jumped around a lot which I realize may be necessary when so many characters are involved over such a large timeframe. It just made it hard to follow and I wanted to learn more about specific characters rather than jumping over time periods in their lives.

How could the performance have been better?

I thought the reading came across as dull and uninteresting. It was a struggle to finish the book as a result.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

The beginning was quite good. And throughout there were good lines that made me take pause.

Frances Mayes - widely published poet, gourmet cook, and travel writer - opens the door to a wondrous new world when she buys and restores an abandoned villa in the spectacular Tuscan countryside. In sensuous and evocative language, she brings the reader along as she discovers the beauty and simplicity of life in Italy. Also available: Bella Tuscany.

What would have made Under the Tuscan Sun better?

Try as I may I could not listen to this audio book. The narrator's monotone voice made this a completely unbearable experience.

What could Frances Mayes have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

    Hire a professional reader.

How did the narrator detract from the book?

I could not make it past the first chapter. If I want to read this book I will get it from the library in paper form, but to be honest I've lost interest in it at this point. I think I will stick to the movie, which I love!

You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?

I'm sure it must have some, but I could not get there because listening to it made me want to rip my ears out. I had to stop.
