I had no expectations starting this book, and it turned out to be one of my favorite series so far! Sure, it has vampires and witches and demons - but the story is so very original that it sets itself far apart from other works in this genre. It's done with intelligence and an almost self deprecating humor and the action was interesting and non-stop. After finishing this - I went right for the 2nd and 3rd in the series. If you enjoy paranormal testosterone driven action novels - this is the series for you. I highly recommend you read them in order. Enjoy!
This may not have an original take on the zombie apocalypse but it was a fun and interesting read. It was never boring and had a great balance of action and character development. Not much background on how the virus happened or spread which kinda leaves a little hole in the story. The alcohol aspect of it was never explained...I hope it will be in the next installment. I like a little bit of a science mixed in with my post apocalyptic fiction and there isn't any here. Just straight into the mayham and zombies...which is okay too sometimes. I've already started the second book so I feel good about recommending this as an addition to your collection.
As with the series debut, this brave band of young survivors fight more against their fellow man than with zombies. It's pretty essential that you read the first book in order to understand this follow-up. You'll meet many of the same characters...good and bad. A lot of the story revolves around the relationships between Benny and his crew. There is no shortage of zombies and excitement though! I thoroughly enjoyed the new element of danger the author added to the story as well!
All in all, it was a good follow up to the story and I plan on listening to the third installment soon.
I was skeptical about introducing werewolves into the mix of vampires, zombies and witches - but it worked and kept me listening to the very end. It's strange to pick up after almost a century later AFTER the zombie fallout occurred but once you separated yourself from the Talbots and let this become your point of reference, it was a wonderfully engaging story. I would absolutely read the follow up book if one were to surface.
This is your typical zombie story told from a military perspective. It did take me a few chapters to thoroughly get into the story - but then I started to bond with the characters. There isn't a whole lot of interaction with the zombies on a close combat scenario - mostly military tactics and warfare. It was good enough though to check out the 2nd installment. So I will!
This is classic Molly Harper - amusing, light and entertaining. I always buy everything she puts out in the genre - it's just so fun!
The cover art drew me in and the story hooked me! This is not your typical zombie eats humanity story. It's more of a coming of age tale for a young zombie. It's immensely humorous and completely entertaining. The performance is believable and very well done. I'm going to have to recommend this as long as you are willing to change your perception about zombies being brainless moaning eating machines. The characters are wonderful and I can't wait to see what lies ahead for them in the 2nd book!
I'm so glad I found this because I've been a little worried that I may have exhausted my supply of Zombie fiction on Audible!
I couldn't buy this fast enough when I saw it released. I've listened to every single one of Frost's books and she did not disappoint with Once Burned.
Again, she creates a set of characters that you become completely invested in. Then she sets them on a chaotic action filled adventure packed with just enough heat to make it believable. I've read thousands and thousands of books - but NO ONE has ever written love scenes that affect me this physically until I read Frost's work.
The premise may not be an original one, but it's a storyline that I can't get enough of.....gifted human girl meets dark and mysterious vampire, lives are threatened and working through the issues, girl and vampire fall in lust. I love it. If you love this genre....it's a no-brainer!
By the end of this book, my blood pressure was through the roof and my nails were bitten down to the quick. It's no secret that King is a master storyteller, but I wondered how his work would translate into audio format. It turns out that was every bit as good as reading it. The first couple of hours where King begins to introduce us to the characters were lengthy and I did have to rewind a couple of times - but this is because there is a huge cast of characters in this story, and it simply takes time to describe them. But it's done so well that by the time the proverbial poop hits the fan, you are feeling the desperation of the "good guys" and are wishing long painful deaths to the villains. This is a super unique story that makes you ponder subconsciously the ethics and nature of human beings as well as feel as passionately and fiercely as the characters do. The dome situation is every bit as gritty and desperate as you would think....and it's such an original premise to have this localized apocalypse going on while the rest of the world functions normally! If you like reading apocalyptic fiction, you will certainly appreciate this book. The scientific research that was put into the story is very accurate and completely realistic which only adds to the horrible situation this poor community is in. The book downloaded into 5 parts - but they went by so quickly. Do not let the length of the book deter you....you will not regret it!
This is fun light paranormal storytelling that entertains but not to the point of eliciting emotion from the reader. It's a great story mainly about witches, vampires and demons and how they interact and make each other's lives difficult. The witchcraft aspect (such as the spells and materials they use) is quite interesting! The demon that we were introduced to in the first book has really developed into a despicable creature that we can all love to hate.
Overall, thought provoking and insightful, maybe not. But certainly fun and entertaining! Recommended to those who enjoy this particular genre.
