  • Tyrannosaur Canyon

    • UNABRIDGED (12 hrs and 47 mins)
    • By Douglas Preston
    • Narrated By Scott Sowers

What fire bolt from the galactic dark shattered the Earth eons ago, and now hides in that remote cleft in the southwest U.S. known as Tyrannosaur Canyon?

Peggy says: "A pleasure to listen to"
    "A very enjoyable listen"

I actually enjoyed the characters and disagree with a previous reviewer who thought they were two dimensional. There are certainly some events that were too coincidental but I really enjoyed listening to the story and all of the different threads going on. The mystery kept me listening and I never felt bored.

I also enjoyed the scientific explorations and explanations.

  • Cell: A Novel

    • UNABRIDGED (12 hrs and 36 mins)
    • By Stephen King
    • Narrated By Campbell Scott

The cause of the devastation is a phenomenon that will come to be known as The Pulse, and the delivery method is a cell phone. Everyone's cell phone. Clay and the few desperate survivors who join him suddenly find themselves in the pitch-black night of civilization's darkest age, surrounded by chaos, carnage, and a human horde that has been reduced to its basest nature...and then begins to evolve.

"Really great right up to the ending"

This was a compelling story that kept my attention all the way through the book. The character development was excellent. The narration was also excellent.
But when I got towards the end of the book, I was really, really disappointed with the ending. It was as if he ran out of time and had to finish quickly. Very, very weak ending.

  • Jupiter

    • UNABRIDGED (12 hrs and 55 mins)
    • By Ben Bova
    • Narrated By Christian Noble, David Warner
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

Grant Archer merely wanted to study astrophysics, to work quietly as an astronomer on the far side of the Moon. But the forces of the "New Morality", the coalition of censorious do-gooders who run 21st-century America, have other plans for him. To his distress, Grant is torn from his young bride and sent to a research station in orbit around Jupiter, charged with the task of spying on the scientists who work there.

    Kevin says: "Great Stuff!"
    "Captivating and enjoyable"

I did not know what to expect but I really enjoyed this story. The characterization and storyline kept me wanting to listen to more. I especially liked the mixture of the science with the fictional story.

"Some people are too picky -- This is a must"

I think some people are just too hard to please. I really enjoyed DaVinci Code because of the fast-paced suspense and the subject matter. I enjoyed this book for the same reason - maybe more because of the technology topic. I have listened to over 70 audio books and this is one of the most enjoyable I have heard -- It was difficult to put down. Sure, the heros get lucky a bunch through fortuitous events-- but what's a thriller without them -- Think James Bond movies.

The narrator sounds were sometimes noticeable, but not to the extent that it bothered me. I probably would not have thought about them had others not made a big deal of them.

  • Are You Afraid of the Dark?

    • UNABRIDGED (8 hrs and 55 mins)
    • By Sidney Sheldon
    • Narrated By Kit Flanagan
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

In Berlin, a woman vanishes from the city streets. In Paris, a man plunges from the Eiffel Tower. In Denver, a small plane crashes into the mountains. In Manhattan, a body washes ashore from the East River. At first these seem to be random incidents, but the police soon discover that all four of the victims are connected to Kingsley International Group (KIG), the largest think tank in the world.

Lori A. Wersinger says: "Another good one"
    "Don't bother with this one"

I am 20 mins away from finishing and decided to look back at the reviews. I am wondering now why I downloaded it in the first place. I recall reading the narrative and thinking it sounded interesting, but I must have skipped the reviews, which are all accurate.

I actually enjoyed most of the beginning of the book -- tolerating the syrupy, romantic diversions. There were a lot of seemingly unrelated events and it was interesting to find out how they came together. However, about six hours into it I suddenly realized how bad the dialog was and how tedious and unbelievable it had become. It was like the author ran out of ideas but had to add length to the story. There were some very, very unbelievable plot points toward the end but by then I was almost finished so I am plowing through it.

For the Sheldon fans, maybe the abbriged version would be better.

  • Idlewild

    • UNABRIDGED (8 hrs and 10 mins)
    • By Nick Sagan
    • Narrated By Clayton Barclay Jones
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

He wakes alone, nameless, in a strangely bucolic day-after-tomorrow world. His amnesia is near-total; he cannot remember his name and doesn't recognize anything around him, but he knows with absolute certainty that someone has tried to kill him – and will surely try again. As he tries to discover the identity of the person who wants him dead, he quickly begins to unravel sinister truths, which make it clear that the ramifications of his search are far greater than he could ever have imagined.

    Craig says: "Great story"
"Mixed Feelings - Some Good and Some Boring"

I have very mixed feelings about my enjoyment of this listen. The story line was very imaginitive and I liked being surprised as the author slowly unveiled the mystery of the story. There were very interesting parts. But my problem is that in between the key plot points, there was a lot of very boring parts. It's almost as if the author stretched a very good short story into a novel by adding a lot of filler. I am not sure whether I will try the sequel.

  • Don't Know Much About American History

    • UNABRIDGED (7 hrs and 5 mins)
    • By Kenneth C. Davis
    • Narrated By Oliver Wyman, Jonathan Davis

In his trademark question-and-answer style, Davis introduces our ancestors who settled the East and expanded the West, as well as those who had been living here all along. His sure touch brings the drama and excitement of the American story vividly to life.

Mark says: "An enjoyable look into our past"
"An enjoyable look into our past"

I decided to try this "book" since it is much shorter than the more general History version by this same author. I have always been interested in our history but could never deal with the dry, educational texts. The question and answer format of this audio book was very enjoyable. The author bounces between historical people (e.g. Washington, Lincoln, Patrick Henry, etc.), events (e.g. Revolutionary war, Civil War, prohibition, etc.), and other short topics. It became less interesting as he moved into more recent events, but overall it was well worth the listen.

    Charles Stembridge says: "Narrator"
"One of the best books I have ever"

This book was simply one of the very best I have ever enjoyed. I listened to it in a different format (tape series) before I was an Audible member, but the book itself was outstanding. The combination of history in the medevil times and the aspect of time travel was riveting. I cannot recommend it enough.
