Lyrical yet unsentimental, The Midwife's Apprentice won the coveted 1996 Newbery Medal. Filled with striking characters, it paints unforgettable pictures of village life in the Middle Ages, the midwife's craft, and a very remarkable girl's growing independence and pride.

Amazon Customer says: "A good morality tale for young people"

Is there anything you would change about this book?

The book accurately portrayed the poverty and suffering. It was not a very happy book overall.

What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)

Sort of a surprise ending but I liked how it concluded.

What does Jenny Sterlin bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

    Not sure

Was The Midwife's Apprentice worth the listening time?

    Yes

Haunted by the past, John Rain kills to order and leaves no trace, but the death at his hand of an old man has unforeseen complications - and soon Rain is trying to protect not just his carefully preserved anonymity but his own life and those of the people he cares for. A stunning, page-turning reinvention of the hitman thriller, Rain Fall marks the introduction of a compelling new series character and major new thriller writing career.

If you could sum up Rain Fall in three words, what would they be?

    Believable, fast-paced, predictable

Who was your favorite character and why?

John Rain, the main character. The others were less well formed.

Have you listened to any of Brian Nishii’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

No. He appeared to know his Japanese pronunciation but made a couple of English pronunciation mistakes. Otherwise, I thought he was very good.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

When Rain is tailing his victims/suspects.

    Any additional comments?

The CIA/black ops Viet Nam thing is a little hackneyed. I do feel like reading the next one though.

Richard Sharpe, bold, professional and ruthless, goes to war. Once a private, now he leads his men into action in the bloodiest battle of the war. The danger is as great from his enemies on his own side as from those across the battlefield. But through treachery and gun smoke, through sword fighting and bloody warfare, Sharpe saves his own life and the honour of the regiment.

Mark E. Young says: "Best one so far in the Sharpe Series"

Typical Sharpe but the story is a bit more exciting than previous ones.

  • Nothing to Lose: A Jack Reacher Novel

Two lonely towns in Colorado: Hope and Despair. Between them, 12 miles of empty road. Jack Reacher never turns back. It's not in his nature. All he wants is a cup of coffee. What he gets is big trouble. So in Lee Child's electrifying new novel, Reacher - a man with no fear, no illusions, and nothing to lose - goes to war against a town that not only wants him gone, it wants him dead.

Ed says: "Least favorite of all the Reacher novels"
    "Big Lee Child Fan Disappointed"
    Overall

Lee Child is my favorite writer. But in this one, you feel like you are the one trudging back and forth from Hope to Despair, the two towns in the novel. Many parts are not believable but mostly it is just boring.

Edge of your seat action. The character is from the Lincoln Lawyer which I am reading now. Enthralling.
