While I completly ejoyed The Glass Castle I have to say I was disappointed with Half Broke Horses. The story gave a good background for The Glass Castle but the narration just didn't work for me. The narration was too monotone and it sounded at times as if the narrator was bored with the story. Maybe that happens with authors narrate their own work; they are so familiar with the story that they can come off sounding flat.
Wonderfully captivating story line; pulled me in and wouldn't let me go! At first listen I was afraid that I might not be able to keep up with the story line as it bounced back and forth between different eras but that wasn't the case. The author stays in one timeframe long enough to allow the reader to get comfortable before switching. I found myself part of the mystery of the story; wanting to rush from chapter to chapter just to unravel the next clue! The narrator did a wonderful job distinguising the characters from one another without overdoing it. I will definitely look for additional works by both this author and the narrator.
