Nathaniel is eleven-years-old and a magician's apprentice, learning the traditional art of magic. All is well until he has a life-changing encounter with Simon Lovelace, a magician of unrivaled ruthlessness and ambition. When Lovelace brutally humiliates Nathaniel in public, Nathaniel decides to speed up his education, teaching himself spells far beyond his years. With revenge on his mind, he masters one of the toughest spells of all and summons Bartimaeus, a five-thousand-year-old djinni, to assist him.

    Randy says: "Terrific Trilogy"

I am a pretty tough critic. And this was fabulous. It took me a bit of listening before I was into it, but then I fell in love. It is sassy, spunky, full of interesting characters that you really get to know. You can smell, taste and feel the story as it unwinds. Strong plot. Simon Jones is fabulous as a narrator. Great voice, great pace, easy to understand. My eight year old daughter loved it, my 12 year old son as well. Ditch your Harry Potter and give this a listen. I am about to start Book Two today.

  • The Kite Runner

    • UNABRIDGED (12 hrs and 6 mins)
    • By Khaled Hosseini
    • Narrated By Khaled Hosseini

Why we think it’s a great listen: Never before has an author’s narration of his fiction been so important to fully grasping the book’s impact and global implications. Taking us from Afghanistan in the final days of its monarchy to the present, The Kite Runner is the unforgettable story of the friendship between two boys growing up in Kabul. Their intertwined lives, and their fates, reflect the eventual tragedy of the world around them.

    "It was OK"

What I enjoyed most in this book was the immersion into the Afgani culture. The story was good, if unbelievable and often predictable. However, the "writing" itself was mediocre. The editor should have worked harder with this first-time author. I was often bored and often annoyed at the predicability of it. However, the story line and the timeliness of the book redeemed it for me.

    "A long-time Boomerang fan"

My son started listening to Boomerang 5 years ago at age 7. Now, he puts it on as he climbs into bed each night. At age 11, he stopped -- but only for a few months. He is back eagerly awaiting each new issue. Boomerang, an audio magazine, is sweet, funny, poignant, and interesting. It isn't cynical or sassy, but very home spun and perhaps you could say a bit "old-fashioned". My son began listening when his interests in the world were bigger than his own reading ability, thus the audio magazine proved perfect for him. It remains a good friend. Try an issue, see if it is for you.
