Seven-year-old Henry Day is kidnapped and renamed "Aniday" by changelings, ageless beings who inhabit the woods near his home. The changelings also leave behind one of their own, who flawlessly impersonates Henry except for one noteworthy detail: the new Henry is a prodigiously talented pianist.

    "Good (not great) story"
    Overall

I am only giving this story three stars because I did not love it and I did not hate it, I was sort of in the middle. I love fantasy books and was really excited to listen to this book, but it did not live up to my expectations. For me, the story of the changelings living in the forest and the power struggles that existed in their community was the most interesting part of the story. Henry Day's story was rather dull and got more interesting as he began to explore his history (pre-changeling). I thought the narrators were good, even though it was hard to distinguish their voices.

At the helm of a tall ship stands Mina Paradis. She may look young, but Mina's spent a lifetime serving her family and country. Now she's tired, so tired, of following orders and watching her friends grow old and die while she never ages a day. Desperate to escape the slow suffocation of a circumscribed life, Mina prepares to break the terms of her indenture. Such treason threatens to propel her through an intensely personal struggle to save herself, spare her crew, and face an adolescence long-delayed.

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Yes, especially to friends who enjoy sci fi/fantasy with some steam punk.

What did you like best about this story?

I liked how the story explored the relationship between mother and daughter. I'm interested to see how it develops in the next books in the series.

Miss Elizabeth Mapp, magnificent grande dame and heiress, is always on the lookout lest her neighbors fall outside the bounds of perfect, exemplary manners. But her tightly controlled world is soon beset on all sides by interlopers, first in the disturbingly masculine form of two very different retired army officers, both of whom are anything but retiring in their conflicting aims upon her heart.

    G. Griffin says: "Classic British Turn of the Century Comedy"
    "Enjoyable"
    Overall

I had a little trouble getting into this book, but after about 45 minutes I was hooked. While I thought that Miss Mapp could be petty and gossipy, her little rants, plottings, and schemes seemed familiar and realistic. I even found myself laughing out loud at some of the conversations that Miss Mapp had with Diva. For me, the competitions between Miss Mapp and Diva were the best part of the book and I thought the book lost momentum when it followed other characters.

Just in the last three years a flood of new scientific findings, driven by revelations discovered in the human genome, has provided compelling new answers to many long-standing mysteries about our most ancient ancestors, the people who first evolved in Africa and then went on to colonize the whole world. Nicholas Wade weaves this host of news-making findings together for the first time into an intriguing new history of the human story before the dawn of civilization.

    "Interesting theories"
    Overall

This book was interesting and I enjoyed the author's explanations of how language families came to be and how they can be traced based on genetics. I also liked hearing the theories of global population migrations and how genetics has helped to shed light on these theories. I did get a little frustrated with his lack of support for some of the theories presented.

When Lyra and her daemon Pantalaimon decide to spy on a presentation her uncle, the commanding Lord Asriel, is making to the elders of Jordan College they have no idea that they will become witnesses to an attempted murder, and even less that they are taking the first steps in a journey that will lead them into danger and adventure unlike anything Lyra's unfettered imagination has conjured up.

    Arnold says: "A Terrific Book"
    "Engaging story"
    Overall

This book was very well read by Phillip Pullman and the full cast made the story come alive. I was intrigued by the idea of parallel worlds and thought the author did a good job of creating Lyra's world. I can't wait to start listening to the next book in the series!
