Although his father had been reluctant to become a field operative, Jack Ryan Jr. wants nothing more. Privately training with a seasoned Special Forces drill instructor, he’s honing his skills to transition his work within The Campus from intelligence analysis to hunting down and eliminating terrorists wherever he can—even as Jack Ryan Sr. campaigns for re-election as President of the United States. But what neither father nor son knows is that the political and the personal have just become equally dangerous.

The Jack Ryan series has be out there so long, I was curious to see how this book would evolve the characters, especially Jack Jr. It was well worth the credit. LDP does a good job narrating and giving the book additional life.

In Creekstone, Texas, a small, quiet suburb of Houston, football was king and David Temple was a prince. A former high school and college gridiron-star-turned-coach, he had a fairy-tale marriage to bright, vivacious Belinda Lucas, a teacher at the local high school who was so warm and popular her colleagues called her "The Sunshine Girl". The fairy tale ended savagely on January 11, 1999, when Belinda's lifeless body was discovered in a closet. Her skull had been shattered by a shotgun blast at close range. She was eight months pregnant.

Where does Shattered rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

The story is good, the research extensive, but the narrator is very tedious! Despite, the book is a great true crime story and cautionary tale for parents!

What was one of the most memorable moments of Shattered?

It is shocking to think that a whole family of people are so arrogant that they think they can b-s a jury of logical people. Like playing football a decade prior would shelter him from the responsiblitiy of taking two lives! Amazing!

How did the narrator detract from the book?

The narrator read every line like it was a newspaper headline. Her tendancy to try to make every word sound SENSATIONAL really worked to detract from the authenticity of the book.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes, watching David Temple's life and family unfold are like watching a train wreck. He was raised to be a sociopath so, it's no wonder he's in prison. To the end, his family was lying to protect him!

By the time James Frey enters a drug and alcohol treatment facility, he has so thoroughly ravaged his body that the doctors are shocked he is still alive. Inside the clinic, he is surrounded by patients as troubled as he: a judge, a mobster, a former world-champion boxer, and a fragile former prostitute. To James, their friendship and advice seem stronger and truer than the clinic's droning dogma of How to Recover.

This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?

Shame on Harpo for not researching this story!! Read the report on the Smoking Gun. Most of the touching accounts in this book are debunked in that report. So much so, that it makes you wonder what else is fictional! The major crimes, the portrail of the angry outcast, the pure and direct honesty.... systematically dismantled!

Has A Million Little Pieces turned you off from other books in this genre?

    Just this author

Would you be willing to try another one of Oliver Wyman’s performances?

    Yes

The unworldly, innocent Ana is startled to realize she wants this man and, despite his enigmatic reserve, finds she is desperate to get close to him. Unable to resist Ana’s quiet beauty, wit, and independent spirit, Grey admits he wants her, too—but on his own terms.

The narration is good, given the plot. When the most common phrases are 'oh my' and 'holy crap' (both used dozens of times), you really have to adjust down your expectations. The characters and subject is interesting, but the book is fifty shades of disappointing.

This is a great listen. The narrator brings you back to the late 1800's. You can feel the excitement of the expo building as the book progress, alongside the desperation of the crimes of Holmes. The juxtaposition of beauty/evil, strength/weakness and light/darkness are intriguing.

Why we think it’s a great listen: Some books are meant to be read; others are meant to be heard – Water for Elephants falls into the second group, and is one of the best examples we have of how a powerful performance enhances a great story. Nonagenarian Jacob Jankowski reflects back on his wild and wondrous days with a circus. It's the Depression Era and Jacob, finding himself parentless and penniless, joins the Benzini Brothers Most Spectacular Show on Earth.

I am SO glad that I listened to this book instead of reading! The story is heart-breaking/warming and it's a truly enjoyable book, but the stars (other than Rosie!) are the narrators. They give incredible warmth, passion and life to this listen! It is on my list of top 10, but only in audio!

Why we think it’s a great listen: Seabiscuit was a runaway success, and Hillenbrand’s done it again with another true-life account about beating unbelievable odds. On a May afternoon in 1943, an Army Air Forces bomber crashed into the Pacific Ocean and disappeared, leaving only a spray of debris and a slick of oil, gasoline, and blood. Then, on the ocean surface, a face appeared.....

Laura Hillenbrand's writing absolutely captivates listeners! From the monotony of the lapping ocean to the shiver that runs up your back when Louis encounters his torturer! The story is amazing and Ms Hillenbrand has captured it masterfully....very well done!

For 75 years, the kidnapping and murder of Charles Lindbergh's infant son has gone unsolved. Evidence, opinion, and logic have discredited the notion that Bruno Richard Hauptmann - electrocuted in 1936 - acted alone. In this meticulous and authoritative account of the crime, the trial, and the times of the Lindbergh kidnapping, Robert Zorn clears away decades of ungrounded speculation surrounding the case. Zorn has written a shocking and captivating account of the crime and the original "Trial of the Century".

I never write reviews and I usually don't read them, but if I can save you the pain of listening to this, it's worth a try. The writing is choppy and terribly sappy, it sounds like something a 6th grader has submitted as a project. I'm not sure how Patterson is still selling books, but the last several I have read have been a waste of time. Listening to this one confirmed it for me! And what is it with his calling out name brands of items, does he get a kickback from Creme de la Mer and Boss Hugo??? The narrator tries to give it life, but I think Patterson's lost his mojo!!

The biggest redwood trees are over 1,000 years old, rising more than 35 stories in what's left of the once-vast, ancient redwood forest. Believed to be impossible to ascend, these majestic giants have remained unexplored until recently, when a tiny group of daring botanists and amateur naturalists discovered a lost, dangerous, and hauntingly beautiful world high above California.
