This is a sweeping narrative history of the events leading to 9/11, a groundbreaking look at the people and ideas, the terrorist plans, and the Western intelligence failures that culminated in the assault on America. Lawrence Wright's remarkable book is based on five years of research and hundreds of interviews that he conducted in Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Sudan, England, France, Germany, Spain, and the United States.

It took a little bit to get into this one, but once it got going it was absolutely fascinating. To truly understand the world of Islamic terror of our day and it historical roots, this book is indispensible. No agenda, everyone involved is criticized or praised where deserved. Winner of LA Times Book of the Year, Pulitzer Prize...everyone should read.

Here is one of the best historical novels ever written. Lame, stammering Claudius, once a major embarrassment to the imperial family and now emperor of Rome, writes an eyewitness account of the reign of the first four Caesars: the noble Augustus and his cunning wife, Livia; the reptilian Tiberius; the monstrous Caligula; and finally old Claudius himself. Filled with poisonings, betrayal, and shocking excesses, I Claudius is history that rivals the most exciting contemporary fiction.

Far from dry history, this gives great insight into the world of Ancient Rome - Claudius and his reader are charming.

The word "barbarian" quickly conjures images of Attila the Hun and Genghis Khan. Yet few people realize these men belong to a succession of nomadic warriors who emerged from the Eurasian steppes to conquer civilizations. It's a part of ancient and medieval history that's often overlooked, but for an accurate view of how the world evolved, it's essential. Covering some 6,000 miles and 6,000 years, this eye-opening course illuminates how a series of groups pushed ever westward, coming into contact with the Roman Empire, Han China, and distant cultures from Iraq to India.

    "Excellent"

This is definitely a two-time listen, so much information and fascinating history, it will improve and deepen on subsequent listenings.

  • Lawrence in Arabia: War, Deceit, Imperial Folly, and the Making of the Modern Middle East

Based on four years of intensive primary document research, Lawrence in Arabiadefinitively overturns received wisdom on how the modern Middle East was formed. Sweeping in its action, keen in its portraiture, acid in its condemnation of the destruction wrought by European colonial plots, this is a book that brilliantly captures the way in which the folly of the past creates the anguish of the present.

Really provides an excellent overview of the history, characters and events of the Middle East arena of WW1. Very in depth without getting TOO far into the tall grass.

Back in print in an all-new edition is the engaging and illuminating chronicle of the life of the "Queen of Mystery". Fans of Hercule Poirot and Miss Marple and readers of John Curran’s fascinating biographies Agatha Christie’s Secret Notebooks and Murder in the Making will be spellbound by the compelling, authoritative account of one of the world’s most influential and fascinating novelists, told in her own words and inimitable style - and here in her own voice. These audio excerpts were dictated by Agatha Christie herself.

What made the experience of listening to Agatha Christie: An Autobiography the most enjoyable?

It was in her own voice, a little hard at the onset as the quality is current to the time it was (tape) recorded, but really charming once it started to flow. It really takes one back in time to what it was like to be her and get a peek into her perspective on life. (I'd recommend listening on headphones, the car might be difficult to hear well.)

Which character – as performed by Agatha Christie – was your favorite?

    Herself!

    Any additional comments?

It helps to have read her memoir of archaelogical digging with her husband, "Come, Tell me how you Lived", which is fantastic and only 1.99 on Amazon for Kindle. This reading is also an extract from her longer autobiograhpy.
