  • Mr. Penumbra's 24-Hour Bookstore: A Novel

    • UNABRIDGED (7 hrs and 41 mins)
    • By Robin Sloan
    • Narrated By Ari Fliakos
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

The Great Recession has shuffled Clay Jannon out of his life as a San Francisco Web-design drone - and serendipity, sheer curiosity, and the ability to climb a ladder like a monkey has landed him a new gig working the night shift at Mr. Penumbra’s 24-Hour Bookstore. But after just a few days on the job, Clay begins to realize that this store is even more curious than the name suggests. There are only a few customers, but they come in repeatedly and never seem to actually buy anything....

Susan says: "Fun, thought-provoking, mysterious.... and FUN !"
"loved the geeky references, the relationships..."
What made the experience of listening to Mr. Penumbra's 24-Hour Bookstore the most enjoyable?

First, the cracks about audio books are seriously funnier in this context. The geek references were exactly my cup of tea. The relationships felt like ones I have with people I know, so very authentic (I'm pretty sure I date the protagonist.) Google is a great hero but so are real human beings. The obsessions with books and mysteries are perfect for anyone who has ever wanted to find themselves in the middle of the stories of the jr high fantasy section.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Clay the protagonist is exactly the kind of person I love to hang around with. He's curious, creative and inescapablely optimistic. Failure is not the end, it just means to try something else. He's also goofy and a dreamer. Its his relationships with people that make his life work even our modern internet world.

What about Ari Fliakos’s performance did you like?

He had the right 20 something tone for Clay and his voices for other characters are done with the affect of letting you know these are the way Clay sees these people, not the people themselves. It a great rhythm to his reading and it goes by so fast. I immediately started listening to it again as soon as I was done the first time.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

Mysterious cults, hacker girls and ILM special effects... All Clay thought he wanted was a job in an all night book store.

    Any additional comments?

Delightful! Share this one with everyone you know.

    • UNABRIDGED (12 hrs and 38 mins)
    • By Peter Clines
    • Narrated By Ray Porter
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

There are some odd things about Nate’s new apartment. Of course, he has other things on his mind. He hates his job. He has no money in the bank. No girlfriend. No plans for the future. So while his new home isn’t perfect, it’s livable. The rent is low, the property managers are friendly, and the odd little mysteries don’t nag at him too much. At least, not until he meets Mandy, his neighbor across the hall, and notices something unusual about her apartment. And Xela’s apartment. And Tim’s. And Veek’s.

    Magpie says: "Super solid listen!!"
"A little Lovecraft, a lot of great characters."

I could have spent many more hours near apartment 14. I relisten once a month.

  • Rescue Me

    • UNABRIDGED (7 hrs and 46 mins)
    • By Rachel Gibson
    • Narrated By Kathleen Early
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

She's 33, unmarried, and stuffed into a Bubble-Yum-pink bridesmaid dress. And the whole town wants to fix her up with anyone with a dental plan.... Who's going to rescue Sadie Hollowell now? Everyone in Lovett, Texas, knows Sadie has always been a "notional" kind of gal. She got a notion to leave town ASAP and never visit her daddy (bless his heart) again. Now she's back and got the notion to invite a good-looking, hard-muscled, total stranger to her cousin's wedding.

Candy Lyons says: "Rescue Me Rocks"
"Actual tear jerker, also very hot nookie"
Where does Rescue Me rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

Solidly good audio quality, good reader, characters I learned to care about despite their existing in a romance novel.

What other book might you compare Rescue Me to and why?

I read the second book in the series, so it compares well to that one. Not as much silly fun as Molly Harper books, but characters that seem like real life people you might meet.

Which character – as performed by Kathleen Early – was your favorite?

Vince. Not always easy for a readers to do cross gender reading and I think she did a great balance of giving him audio distinctness, without making it cartoon like.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

Friends with benefits has more benefits than Vince or Sadie expected.

    Any additional comments?

Some stereo types, but too bad. Loved that Sadie was really together, not a neurotic mess like so many ladies in romance novels. She's a tough lady I think I'd like as a friend, not always true in romance.
I mostly read romance because of the sense of humor in so many of them. This one was a bit more serious than my usual, so while I actually cried at a couple of parts I'm really glad I listened to it.

  • Nine Princes in Amber: The Chronicles of Amber, Book 1

    • UNABRIDGED (5 hrs and 31 mins)
    • By Roger Zelazny
    • Narrated By Alessandro Juliani

Amber is the one real world, of which all others including our own Earth are but Shadows. Amber burns in Corwin's blood. Exiled on Shadow Earth for centuries, the prince is about to return to Amber to make a mad and desperate rush upon the throne.

Joe says: "Great begining of the series"
"Solid hero with amnesia meets dues ex machina"
If you could sum up Nine Princes in Amber in three words, what would they be?

    cliche, enjoyable, romp

What was the most interesting aspect of this story? The least interesting?

Most interesting: the universe of Amber is wonderful to take a wander through. Sort of a Platonic Ideal with shadows through which a certain privileged family may travel.

Least interesting: the way stumbling blindly through the story still seems to keep turning out all right.

What about Alessandro Juliani’s performance did you like?

Very likable Corwin/Corey. Very similar to the voice in my head when I first read the book.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Not really, chuckle occasionally but no serious belly laughs.

    Any additional comments?

Start of a decent series and lays the foundation for an excellent role-playing game if you're into that sort of thing.
