This book is truly horrible. I am an historian and history teacher. I can't believe the author wasted her time on this book. It is one of the worst historical accounts I've ever read. No new discoveries and no real story to tell. It could be this, or it could be that. Endless droning about Egypt in general and possible explanations of Cleopatra's choices. This book is so bad it hurt my feelings...lol.
I have been an Audible customer for many years. This is the first book for which I have wanted my money back. The narrator, who I'm sure is a nice guy, does not speak American English and I am tired of trying to figure out what the heck he's saying. I lived in NYC for 30 years and have a good understanding of dialects. This book could be great, but you'd never know.
Anyone who speaks American English.
Frustration, frustration, then anger.
Do not buy this book.
This book is truly fascinating in detail and broad scope. It succinctly tells with effortless continuity the tale of a brilliant year in movie-making. However, the narrator can't correctly pronounce anything. Where has this guy lived his entire life? You're going to have a tough go if you can't translate his mispronunciation of names familiar to any movie fan. At least he's heard of Sidney Poitier. He gets close on that one. Still, if you're a movie nut, you've got to hear these backstories. Really interesting stuff...
The author has an amazing and compelling story for the world to hear. Unfortunately, for some unfathomable reason, she has chosen to narrate the book herself. When will authors come to understand that they are writers, not performers? Ms. Hirsi Ali's accent is very difficult to understand. VERY. I spent more time trying to figure out what she just said than actually listening to the harrowing tale. Why do they still allow authors to narrate? Do not get this book unless you want to struggle with every word.
