On November 10, 2008, Dr. Eben Alexander was driven into coma by a disease so lethal that only 1 in 10,000,000 survive. Seven days later, he awakened with memories of a fantastic odyssey deep into another realm that were more real than this earthly one - memories that included meeting a deceased birth sister he had never known existed. Dr. Alexander deployed all his knowledge as a scientist to find out whether his mind could have played a trick on him. In its shutdown state, there was no way it could have.

  • Of Mice and Men

    Story

While the powerlessness of the laboring class is a recurring theme in Steinbeck’s work of the late 1930s, he narrowed his focus when composing Of Mice and Men (1937), creating an intimate portrait of two men facing a world marked by petty tyranny, misunderstanding, jealousy, and callousness. But though the scope is narrow, the theme is universal: a friendship and shared dream that make an individual’s existence meaningful.

If you could sum up Of Mice and Men in three words, what would they be?

    Warm, Sad and Real.

What does Gary Sinise bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

The reader could feel the emotions in the way he read it.

  • A Prayer for Owen Meany

Of all of John Irving's books, this is the one that lends itself best to audio. In print, Owen Meany's dialogue is set in capital letters; for this production, Irving himself selected Joe Barrett to deliver Meany's difficult voice as intended. In the summer of 1953, two 11-year-old boys – best friends – are playing in a Little League baseball game in Gravesend, New Hampshire. One of the boys hits a foul ball that kills the other boy's mother. The boy who hits the ball doesn't believe in accidents; Owen Meany believes he is God's instrument. What happens to Owen after that 1953 foul ball is extraordinary and terrifying.

Which character – as performed by Joe Barrett – was your favorite?

    Owen, of course.

If you could rename A Prayer for Owen Meany, what would you call it?

    Story of character.

There are some odd things about Nate’s new apartment. Of course, he has other things on his mind. He hates his job. He has no money in the bank. No girlfriend. No plans for the future. So while his new home isn’t perfect, it’s livable. The rent is low, the property managers are friendly, and the odd little mysteries don’t nag at him too much. At least, not until he meets Mandy, his neighbor across the hall, and notices something unusual about her apartment. And Xela’s apartment. And Tim’s. And Veek’s.

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Possibly. It seems to fit todays trend.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

The vacuum of being drawn into outer space.

    Any additional comments?

I didn't realize it was going to be a sci fi book as that's not my favorite genre, but I was captivated and easily stayed to the end.

The German shepherd survived three tours in Iraq and Afghanistan sniffing explosives before she lost her handler to an IED and sniper attack, and her PTSD is as bad as Scott’s. • Breaking Point

The recipient of Edgar, Anthony, and Macavity Awards, New York Times best-selling author C. J. Box has won almost every honor in his field. In Breaking Point, Wyoming game warden Joe Pickett is glad to catch up with old friend Lyle Pendergast, but then the man goes missing and is named a suspect in the death of two EPA employees. All signs point to Lyle’s guilt, but the more Joe digs into the case, the more he realizes he’s stepped into the middle of a deadly power play.

This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?

Just too much Hollywood type hype here. In good conscience I cannot recommend this listen.

Has Breaking Point turned you off from other books in this genre?

No, I thought I might enjoy the listen as I am an outdoor person.

Who would you have cast as narrator instead of David Chandler?

Chandler could have brushed up on his pronounciation a bit more.

If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from Breaking Point?

Story line wasn't bad, just presented in an unrealistic tone.
