I was introduced to the Louise Penny's Chief Inspector Gamache series by a friend. What a gift! The series is well written, with an eye to detail allowing you to feel immersed in the story. And Chief Inspector Gamache is a person whom I would most like to emulate.
This particular book kept me on the edge of my seat and wringing my hands until the end. What a great climax to the overall story building over time in the series. Best to read these books in order to help you fully understand what is going on with each of the characters.
LOVE THE NARRATOR! I know exactly which character is speaking just by his voice and affectations.
Protect us from teenage girls! Story is interesting, however, I didn't like any of the characters except for the two investigators. Narrator does an incredible job with the story and is the reason I stuck with it!
John Grisham could tell a story about paint drying that I would enjoy. However, you can tell it was a man trying to think like a woman...she didn't process the world as a woman, but more like a man. I don't know of any women who is wired like this protagonist...but I enjoyed the story none the less.
What an incredible book to read during the Christmas holiday. The narrator was without a doubt one of the best I have ever heard. He did a masterful job of creating the characters that I could recognize each person without verbal cues.
I now understand why this work is a classic. No current day story is as powerful as this. My life has been enriched as a result of listening to this book. Thank you audibles.
Before downloading this book, I read the reviews about how unrealistic this story was...well, for me it was exactly the escape I was looking for...and it didn't have the graphic violence and cruelty to animals that so many of the newer suspense books have. I will probably listen to every book in the series. Wonderful!
I have read a lot of text books on this subject, but this is told in such a way that it keeps your attention while explaining the nuances! Thank you for making avaliable to us in audio form. I also have the book. Hearing it helps me digest the information.
Fascinating! I thoroughly enjoyed!!!
Book ended a little quickly though...almost like the story was finished in a hurry. I would read another book on this topic by this author!!! Refreshing.
This abduction mystery is unpredicatible. And it was surprising to find a code of ethics in the the very characters you'd last expected it. Very entertaining and interesting.
How do you rate a story where you despise each of the characters? First you hate one, then the other, then both with intermittent sympathy? I found myself taking turns hating each of the two main characters, Nick and Amy Dunn. The book and the story is well crafted and smartly told, but I hope not to endure another story like this again. I am emotionally worn out, yet I had to keep listening to the story…even when I was totally disgusted with the characters that I wanted to slap them. This listen was like watching a train wreck that you find horrible, however you cannot pull your eyes away for a moment. Instead, you are drawn into the drama. .
My guess is readers who enjoy psychological thrillers would find this book a realistic and believable study of the complexities in relationships.
And even now I find myself wondering if a sequel will be written and I begin to speculate how the relationship will unfold.
You will enjoy living the events preceding, during and immediately following WWI from mutiple points of view! And the narrator was one of the best. OMG, I couldn't believe how well John Lee could change between accents and vary his cadence of speech to match each of the characters! Normally I like spy/murder mysteries with interesting characters. This novel is a much richer and multi-dimensional and I am the better for having read it! Thank you Ken Follett!
