Set against the colorful tumult of events that gave rise to our fledgling nation, this novel of romance and adventure introduces Phillipe Charboneau. The illegitimate son of an English nobleman, Phillipe flees Europe and, as Philip Kent, joins the men who set our course for freedom. The Bastard is the first volume in the Kent Family Chronicles, a series of novels that details one family's journey in the early years of the American nation.

I thought the narration was fine. I enjoyed the story from the perspective that I learned about American history. However, writing is an art and John Jakes is not a gifted writer. I was hoping for a book of equivalent caliber to the Outlander Series - which is outstanding. I think I will keep looking, and not bother with the rest of this series. The author's writing is cliched and too colloquial, written 40 years ago , but not in a style appropriate to the period being depicted in the story. I am glad I gave it a go but will not continue.

Use your mind's natural rhythm to learn a language with Rhythms Easy Icelandic from EuroTalk. It's naturally easier to learn something when it's set to rhythmic music, so that is exactly what we've done. Rhythms puts your mind painlessly to work: you don't even need to focus! Simple words and phrases are set to a varied pattern of rhythms and music designed to help you learn and to keep you engaged so that you won't just switch off after five minutes.

In my opinion this book is only helpful to begin to hear the sounds of the language. As for learning.... I feel that without having a pdf doc to help visualize the spoken word, the learning you can gain from this book is very limited. I think it's best to buy a proper language guide with audio. This "easy" approach is ineffective. The book provided me with very limited insight and since I paid for this book, I felt my money was not well spent.

One question, a split-second decision, and Brian Darby lies dead on the kitchen floor. His wife, state police trooper Tessa Leoni, claims to have shot him in self-defense, and bears the bruises to back up her tale. For veteran detective D. D. Warren it should be an open-and-shut case. But where is their six-year-old daughter? As the homicide investigation ratchets into a frantic statewide search for a missing child, D. D. Warren must partner with former lover Bobby Dodge to break through the blue wall of police brotherhood, seeking to understand the inner workings of a trooper’s mind while also unearthing family secrets.

What would have made Love You More better?

Better writing. Less predictability. Nothing. I just made a poor choice in this book. I do not recommend this book.

What was most disappointing about Lisa Gardner’s story?

I was looking for a well written detective story. This was not it. The reviews I read appeared promising but, ultimately, misleading. The writing was clichèd and just plain painful to listen to.

I just couldn't finish listening to the book. The story was implausible, the narration was of stereotypical tough cop, boss b**ch, pure agony. A disappointing waste of time.

What do you think the narrator could have done better?

Though I found the narration grating, I think the narrator did a good job with poor material. I did not like voice but yet it was appropriate given the tone of the book. Can't blame the narrator(s).

    Any additional comments?

This was a painful experience. If you're looking for a remotely intelligent detective story, skip this one.

In the spring of 1974, Calliope Stephanides, a student at a girls' school in Grosse Pointe, finds herself drawn to a chain-smoking, strawberry-blonde classmate with a gift for acting. The passion that furtively develops between them - along with Callie's failure to develop physically - leads Callie to suspect that she is not like other girls. In fact, she is not really a girl at all.

What did you love best about Middlesex?

Long ago I tried to read this book but just couldn't get into it. I think I found the pace a bit slow, initially, and just couldn't keep up my interest. However, having a book read to me while I busy myself doing something else around the house, means that I don't have to plow through the slow stuff on my own. The narration was absolutely stellar. I was continually impressed with the narrator's many voices in a complex story. And the story itself was intriguing, a bit "out there" and so well told. I also laughed out loud in a few places and revelled at the author's use of the english language in others.
