Never, ever, ever should someone try to "do" a Maine accent. Either you have an original one or don't attempt this. I found the readers attempt to "do" this accent distracting at best and highly irritating at worst. It was uneven, as though she would remember here or there that she was supposed to be reading a character from Maine. This made the book much less of an enjoyable experience for me. I probably would have liked the book much better if I'd just read it rather than listened to it.
Ove is a terrific character and one that will stick with me for a very long time. His grumpy-old-man personality is so relatable that I can picture him clearly. The reader did a terrific job with the different characters, voices and accents. This book is one of my recent favorites!
I would definitely recommend this book if only for the outstanding performance by Elizabeth McGovern. If I was simply reading this book instead of listening to it I might have rated it entirely differently. Ms. McGovern did a terrific job of capturing the voices, emotions and character of everyone in the book. Bravo!
Elizabeth McGovern WAS this book! She couldn't have done a better job and I will remember these characters for a long time mostly due to her reading/acting.
I was moved by the gentle transformation that the main character goes through during the course of this book. She grows in so many ways from her small-town self to a much more mature, understanding and compassionate woman.
I can't say that I loved the book but I did finish it and was curious to know how it would all end up. Being an identical twin myself, I found some of the situations and dialogue between the sisters to be spot on. Otherwise I thought the twins were generally an unlikable pair.
This was truly a grand tribute to all aspects of NYC. I thought Rebecca Lowman did an outstanding job and the authors prose was spot on. Some readers may be critical of the writing style but I thought it matched the time, location and characters perfectly. A thoroughly enjoyable listening/reading experience.
I really liked this book and LOVED the narrator. It was a book with soooo much sadness but ultimately was a satisfying read. I'd recommend it as long as the overarching sadness isn't too much for you. I have a friend who hated the book but I enjoyed it. Go figure.
While the narrators were very good, the story wasn't something I could finish. It just didn't work for me despite really wanting to like it. I abandoned this one.
