Loved the first book. Loved the main characters. I wanted to give up reading it but fought to finish it. Very disjointed. .Way to much character development of secondary characters.. I feel bad that I did not like the book.
The fact that this is well written hides the fact that this is a bunch of propaganda. And it is just out and out wrong! We have a young man, who is very smart, very articulate who is unhappy because he can't play anymore. He ignores the important things of life and is more concerned that he can't mountain climb any more. And we are expected to feel sorry for him.
I guarantee that Bray's performance brings this book to life much better than reading it. The book can bog down at times but Bray is able to get you through it. Just totally enjoyable.
Great book! Met and loved two characters that will live in my mind forever. The young German boy study is both enlightening and troubling at the same time. How could a young bright boy get caught up in Hitler's propaganda. The young girl is just lovable. I recommended this book to anyone who will listen.
Having read all of the negative reviews, I did not know what to expect. Let me state at the outset, I really enjoyed it! I'm sure many felt the never-ending preaching on the evils of strip-mining was a bit tedious. There was no doubt Grisham had an agenda. Very anti big law firm and very anti defense lawyer. He was able however, to blend a good story into his preaching. I think I liked it because it dealt with topics I know well. I was one of those defense attorneys that represented big corporations in toxic tort cases. (not coal) (We are not all bad) On the other side I worked with a state attorney's office investigating the strip mining industry. What Grisham is saying is true and I believe his effort to make all aware of it is worthwhile. Maybe a little more story and less preaching would have worked better..
I even marked my calendar so that I could read it as soon as it was released. Not only was I disappointed but I felt ripped off. One obvious big difference is that I lived through t he period that he wrote about and easily recognized his left leaning views as sheer propaganda.
In his prior books of this trilogy, I wrote that you could teach a class from the book. I was constantly going on the internet to look up things that I knew little about during the first and second world war that he brought to life in his book.
In book 3 Follett clearly has an agenda and very little story. If he was not spinning his political point of view, he was throwing in a lot of gratuitous, graphic sex. Very little story and very little history.
The reader was terrific as usual.
Could not put it down. Totally different than any book of its kind. I won't say more as to not spoil it. I totally enjoyed it.
I read this in under 2 days. Great character development. Great plot. Exciting, suspenseful, drama, emotion; it has it all. Scot Brick does a great job. I wonder why I just read it as the book is almost 10 years old. It is interesting to see how far technology has come in so short of time.
I have enjoyed all of his books, including this one. But this just did seem up to his normal quality story. In reality there was very little story line with a lot of filler. Just not wild about it like I am with most of his other books. Sometimes I felt that I was listening to the abridged version.
Change of pace book for me. I usually do thrillers and history Great story, great performance. Loved it.
