  • Soulless: An Alexia Tarabotti Novel

Victorian romance mixes seamlessly with elegant prose and biting wit—and werewolves—in Gail Carriger’s delightful debut novel. Soulless introduces Alexia Tarabotti, a parasol-wielding Londoner getting dangerously close to spinster status. But there are more important things than finding a husband. For Alexia was born without a soul, giving her the ability to render any vampire or werewolf completely powerless.

What made the experience of listening to Soulless the most enjoyable?

The storyline progresses wonderfully, if a bit slow, over this entire series of books. The narrator does a wonderful job using tone and accents to help the listener identify the various characters. This book is by turns witty, exciting, adventurous and a very unusual romance. I started with Soulless and am now reading the final book in the series - I simply couldn't stop. I enjoyed the writing style of Gail Carriger, I really felt as though I was immersed in Victorian England, be it an alternate universe with werewolves, vampires and ghosts being commonplace.

What other book might you compare Soulless to and why?

This series is unique in its style and composition.

What does Emily Gray bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

The nuances of the characters are brought alive by Emily Gray, something that would be missed by merely reading the story.

For a 2,000-year-old Druid, Atticus O’Sullivan is a pretty fast runner. Good thing, because he’s being chased by not one but two goddesses of the hunt - Artemis and Diana - for messing with one of their own. Dodging their slings and arrows, Atticus, Granuaile, and his wolfhound Oberon are making a mad dash across modern-day Europe to seek help from a friend of the Tuatha Dé Danann. His usual magical option of shifting planes is blocked, so instead of playing hide-and-seek, the game plan is...run like hell.

What did you love best about Hunted?

I enjoyed all the books in this series and I really hope there are more to come.

What does Luke Daniels bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

I love the way Luke Daniels brings all the characters to life. The second he starts "talking", you know exactly which character is speaking.

Would you listen to Brisingr again? Why?

Yes, definitely. I would listen to the entire series again - after I finish the last book anyway, lol. This may be meant as a young readers book, but even in my fifties I find it wonderful to enter Eragon's world, and Gerard Doyle brings it all to life for me, filling my mind with the beauty, and terror of living in this wonderful world Christopher Paolini has created. I especially love how he has brought all the varied species of his world together in a common cause. The Elves, Dwarves, Humans, Dragons, and even Ergls can co-exist when they have something they believe in to fight for.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Eragon of course, but not just because he's the hero of the story. He is human, he makes mistakes and learns from them. I've watched him grow and become the man he's meant to be. I've feared for him, cared for him, and been filled with a parents' pride as he makes the hard trip from boyhood to manhood.

What about Gerard Doyle’s performance did you like?

He brings life to all the characters, giving each their own voice and personality. He makes them real for me. I would listen to anything he narrates, he could make the phone book sound interesting.

Having narrowly averted an (under)world war, Cat Crawfield wants nothing more than a little downtime with her vampire husband, Bones. Unfortunately, her gift from New Orleans’ voodoo queen just keeps on giving - leading to a personal favor that sends them into battle once again, this time against a villainous spirit. Centuries ago, Heinrich Kramer was a witch hunter. Now, every All Hallows Eve, he takes physical form to torture innocent women before burning them alive.

Would you listen to One Grave at a Time again? Why?

Loved every book in this series, and I would listen to anything narrated by Tavia Gilbert. She makes every character come alive with their own personality and quirks. I never felt like someone was reading me a book, but that I was listening to a story as it happened.

They were masters of the darkness, searching through eternity for a mistress of the light. Lead guitarist of the Dark Troubadors, Dayan was renowned for his mesmerizing performances. His melodies stilled crowds, beckoned, seduced, tempted. And always, he called to her. His lover. His lifemate. He called to her to complete him. To give him the emotions that had faded from his existence, leaving him an empty shell of growing darkness.

    "Fantastic!"
    Overall

I'm a fan of Christine Feehan's work, but this is one of her best. A great story line, interesting characters, and of course, the requisite love interest - but without the overabundance of lovemaking that mars some of these types of novels. I want romance, and hot sex between the main characters, but mostly I want a great story to read and this one really delivered.

    Overall

Mind Game kept me enthralled with its fast paced action. The romance was there too, but it was part of the story, not the story itself. I like a good romantic fantasy, as long as there is more storyline than just romance. This one delivered in full.
