Making a living reproducing famous artworks for a popular online retailer and desperate to improve her situation, Claire is lured into a Faustian bargain with Aiden Markel, a powerful gallery owner. She agrees to forge a painting - a Degas masterpiece stolen from the Gardner Museum - in exchange for a one-woman show in his renowned gallery. But when that very same long-missing Degas painting is delivered to Claire's studio, she begins to suspect that it may itself be a forgery. Her desperate search for the truth leads Claire into a labyrinth of deceit where secrets hidden since the late 19th century may be the only evidence that can now save her life.

    Story

I really enjoyed this work of fiction based on the famous robbery of the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum. The plot twist and turns were fun, the main character was compelling and I learned a lot about the science behind art forgery. I look forward to listening to more works both by the author and by the narrator.

Told in alternating perspectives by a varied and vocal cast of characters, Nussbaum pulls back the curtain to reveal the complicated and funny and tough life inside the walls of an institution for juveniles with disabilities. From Yessenia Lopez, who dreams of her next boyfriend and of one day of living outside those walls, to Teddy, a resident who dresses up daily in a full suit and tie, to Mia, who guards a terrifying secret, Nussbaum has crafted a multifaceted portrait of a way of life hidden from most of us.

    Story

I thoroughly enjoyed this audio selection. The story centers around disabled kids and staff in a nursing home set outside Chicago. The story is compelling, realistic and yet upbeat. Each chapter is narrated from a single point of view and the chapters rotate between different lead characters. The story progresses in a linear fashion but some of the most painful details are revealed after the fact by the speaker in the next chapter. The author reveals the flaws and foibles of the main characters but you love them and root for them anyway. The multi-narrator audio production was top notch. It really enhanced the experience and made the characters that much more real. I will remember this book for a long time to come.

Sisters Natalie and Alice Kessler were close, until adolescence wrenched them apart. Natalie is headstrong, manipulative - and beautiful; Alice is a dreamer who loves books and birds. During their family's summer holiday at the lake, Alice falls under the thrall of a struggling young painter, Thomas Bayber, in whom she finds a kindred spirit. Natalie, however, remains strangely unmoved, sitting for a family portrait with surprising indifference. But by the end of the summer, three lives are shattered.

An epic history of a doomed civilization and a lost empire. The devastating struggle to the death between the Carthaginians and the Romans was one of the defining dramas of the ancient world. In an epic series of land and sea battles, both sides came close to victory before the Carthaginians finally succumbed and their capital city, history, and culture were almost utterly erased.

    Story

This is a thought provoking overview of the political, military, religious and social history of the rise and fall of an early "world" power. The book covers an approximately 800 year period from the founding of the city of Carthage to its complete destruction by Rome. The book is well researched but does not overwhelm the lay reader with source material. Events are presented both from the perspective of Carthage and from other, primarily Greek and Roman sources. There are many parallels between events in this time period and our own. Carthage was much more than Hannibal and the elephants crossing the alps. Well worth a listen.

  • Choosing a College: A Guide for Parents and Students

This book starts at "square one", before you know what questions to ask, what colleges to read about, or what statistics to look up. Sowell candidly describes the inner and outer workings of scores of American colleges and universities, big and small. He gives special attention to special programs, financial aid, and the academic environment.

Paul says: "Whoa! References to 1987? WTF?"
"Dated but worth a quick listen"
    Overall

The author makes thoughtful and worthwhile observations and has many useful and timeless suggestions about the process of choosing a college. However, you do need to sift through a fair bit of chaff to find the wheat. Tables of data are read in a monotonous fashion and there are suggestions about calling or writing for more information rather than using the internet. An abridged or updated version would be a great addition to the Audible collection.

Why we think it’s a great listen: The best book club you’ve never heard of – but will be eager to join, courtesy of a full cast of true characters. January 1946: London is emerging from the shadow of the Second World War, and writer Juliet Ashton is looking for her next book subject. Who could imagine that she would find it in a letter from a man she's never met, a native of the island of Guernsey, who has come across her name written inside a book by Charles Lamb....

"Narrators bring the book to life"

This is a wonderful story that is significantly enhanced by the team of skilled narrators. At the end you feel as if you know the characters as individual friends.

I would like to see more multi narrator productions like these. This was a great listen for the whole family-- teens, parents and grandparents alike.

Life in rural Blanco County, Texas, isn't what most folks would call exciting, and that suits game warden John Marlin just fine. He's happy to spend his days and nights protecting the local wildlife from poachers and the poachers from the local wildlife. There may be a shortage of attractive single women in town, a source of some frustration to Marlin over the years, but he's never really let it bother him...too much.

This book is an entertaining modern mystery that appeals to men and women alike. It is set in rural Texas but the issues are anything but pastoral. Lots of action with a twisting/turning plot. I look forward to sequels from the author and narrator.

Magdalene la Batarde is the madam of the Old Priory Guesthouse in Southwark. She and her women are expected to engage in a number of sinful activities, but bloody murder isn't one of them until Baldassare, the messenger, dies. Though Baldassare isn't a regular client of the Old Priory Guesthouse, Magdalene and her women refuse to allow his death to go unavenged. Of course, their efforts aren't completely altruistic.
