Merrily Watkins, parish priest, single mother, and Deliverance Consultant, heads for the Malvern Hills to investigate an alleged paranormal dimension to a spate of road accidents. A revamped local pub has injected the valley with a shattering surge of inner-city nightlife and drugs. When a dealer is found savagely murdered below the great earthen hillfort of Herefordshire Beacon, police wonder if it is a gangland disposal, a cry of outrage or something more sinister.

What would have made The Remains of an Altar better?

The voice of the murderer guy was so annoying I couldn't listen to the last 5th of the book.

Would you ever listen to anything by Phil Rickman again?

    yes

How did the narrator detract from the book?

some of the voices she does for men sound gross and flemmy.

  • The Mummy Case: An Amelia Peabody Mystery

    • UNABRIDGED (10 hrs)

    Story

The irascible husband of Victorian Egyptologist Amelia Peabody demonstrates again why he has been nicknamed "Father of Curses." Denied permission to dig at the pyramids of Dahshoor, Emerson is awarded instead the "pyramids" of Mazghunah: countless mounds of rubble in the midst of nowhere. Nothing in this barren spot seems worthy of interest - until an antiquities dealer is murdered in his Cairo shop.

    Any additional comments?

I see other people strongly prefer Barbers Rosenblatt. I think it just depends on which narrator you begin with. I could hardly listen to Barbers Rosenblatt. Maybe because I'm an american, but to me the inflections are distracting, she sounds older and heavier and reads more slowly. Susan O'malley is just more clear and snappy, which I feel she fits the character better.

If you're just starting the series, listen to the samples of both. But I recommend Susan O'Malley.
