In the fall of 2009, Taliban insurgents ambushed a patrol of Afghan soldiers and Marine advisors in a mountain village called Ganjigal. Firing from entrenched positions, the enemy was positioned to wipe out 100 men who were pinned down and were repeatedly refused artillery support. Ordered to remain behind with the vehicles, 21 year-old Marine corporal Dakota Meyer disobeyed orders and attacked to rescue his comrades.

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

This was a really great story. The only drawback was McLarty repeatedly saying "Corzeman". As a former corpsman (pronounced core man) I found this distracting. I understand that the former pronunciation is used but not by anyone in the military.

Now, after 240 hours of face-to-face interviews with Kuklinski and his wife and daughters, author Philip Carlo tells his extraordinary story.

Steve Hobart is just a regular guy, his world is tipped on its side as the dead began to walk. He slowly gathers a group of other survivors and, together, they brave the horrors of a Dead world. Every choice seems to yield as many consequences as it does rewards. He struggles with decisions made as well as opportunities lost as he finds himself in the unlikely role of leader. With a group that includes an Army doctor, a five-year-old Hispanic girl, a convicted murderer, and a teen girl who seems far better equipped to deal with the situation....

What did you like best about DEAD? What did you like least?

I'm just into Zombie stories and this one had good reviews. If you like the Zombie Fallout series by Mark Tufo you will like this one.

What was the most interesting aspect of this story? The least interesting?

Most interesting was the survival element. What I found least interesting is the interjection of humor. The attempts at humor took away from the suspense and were a bit over the top. I prefer the seriousness of DJ Molles series The Remaining.

What did you like about the performance? What did you dislike?

    The performance itself was average.

Do you think DEAD needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?

Again, if you like the humorus approach to the zombie genre, you will like the followup.

  • American Desperado: My Life - From Mafia Soldier to Cocaine Cowboy to Secret Government Asset

In 2008 veteran journalist Evan Wright, acclaimed for his New York Times best-selling book Generation Kill and co-writer of the Emmy-winning HBO series it spawned, began a series of conversations with super-criminal Jon Roberts, star of the fabulously successful documentary Cocaine Cowboys. Those conversations would last three years, during which time Wright came to realize that Roberts was much more than the de-facto “transportation chief” of the Medellin Cartel during the 1980s, much more than a facilitator of a national drug epidemic.

Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

Yes, if they liked the gangster/true crime genre.

What did you like best about this story?

I like the fact the author took lots of care to tell the story accurately.

How could the performance have been better?

The narrator stuck his nose into the story way too much. He could have summarized his input up front. There are a lot of voices going on already which highlights one of the downsides to keeping up with an audiobook. And instead of minimizing such distractions, the editor seemed oblivious to the problem.

  • Murder City: Ciudad Juarez and The Global Economy's New Killing Fields

Charles Bowden writes, “this book is not about how the world ends but how a new world is being born.” Murder City explores this new world, focusing on the idea that Mexico is collapsing into a permanent culture of violence. Bowden focuses on Ciudad Juarez, which lies just across the Rio Grande from El Paso. Infamously known as the place where women disappear, last year alone 1,607 people were murdered, a number that is set to accelerate in 2009.

    "Not Quite What I Expected"
    Overall

I think I expected something more like prose and this was more like poetry. Very long and circuitous poetry. As I listened to the first 5 minutes, I assumed I was listening to the prologue as it was kind of dry and loose. But no, this was to be the entire book. I hung on hoping for more but it seldom improved.

All residents of the City have recently died, and they will remain in the City only as long as someone still living on Earth remembers them. On Earth, however, the population has been devastated by a terrible pandemic. Laura Byrd, isolated at an Antarctic research station, may be the only person to have survived the pandemic. But she's running out of time and supplies, and her memories are fading.

I was intriqued by the idea of the after life and kept waiting for something to develop during this story. After 8 hours, it never did develop. I will be far more careful in my future selections. I really felt cheated at the end. Where can I get my 8 hours back?!
